Story & Lesson Highlights with Cassia Jones of Los Angeles

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Cassia Jones. Check out our conversation below.

Good morning Cassia, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: When have you felt most loved—and did you believe you deserved it?
I’ve felt most loved recently when I drop any news into the family group chat about myself! Sounds small, but my sister and cousins and I are all very close and they hype me up and show me love in all the ways I deserve and need.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi my name is Cassia Jones, and I’m
a writer/actor/producer from Los Angeles, Ca. I began writing my blog, ‘To Live & Date in LA’ (formerly known as Awkward Girl in the City), in 2012. Letting readers in on what it’s like to be a single woman dating in Los Angeles & navigating my way through the entertainment industry. People resonated with my all truth no filter approach to storytelling, and it garnered readers from around the world. Voted “Top 10 Blog For Dating in the City” on Dating Advice.

To Live & Date in LA the webseries is written by, produced and stars myself as one of a trio of women dating & trying to make their dreams a reality in Los Angeles. The webseries was nominated for Best Webseries in the Women’s Fashion & Film Awards, and the LA Web Fest for Outstanding Lead Actor & Writing.

Currently I’m pitching two half-hour comedy pilots: Beverly Hills School Nurse, and To Live & Date in LA. I have also written horror and sci-fi thriller screenplays. Along with shopping my projects, I currently started writing and recording a true paranormal podcast titled, ‘Black People Don’t Do Ghosts’…where the culture meets the afterlife.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
Mrs Van Volkenberg was my private piano teacher and also my theatre teacher at school. She’d write these incredible original plays and give me the lead roles! She taught me how to write poetry as well. She saw talents in me I never knew I had. I’m forever grateful for her nurturing guidance.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
In speaking to my younger self, an act my therapist taught me, I’d hug her, holding her close and tell her how loved, kind, smart, beautiful and safe she is. That she deserves love, kindness and joy no matter what, and that she matters to so many people.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
The biggest falsehoods the entertainment industry still perpetuates are that Black stories don’t sell. We’ve seen time and time again how false this is and yet our stories still get pushed to the wayside.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace when I’m in water. Water is healing and therapeutic for me and always has been since childhood. I grew up with a pool in my backyard and learned how to swim at a very young age. The stillness of calm
waters feels like pure peace.
