Carlos Wright shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Carlos , we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Something that brings me a lot of joy outside of work is spending time with my son, Raiden. He’s 10, and he has this way of keeping me grounded and reminding me of what really matters. He inspires me every day and gives me the motivation to keep working hard for our future.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Carlos Wright. I’m a 31-year-old film director based in Los Angeles, and I’ve been telling stories through film for the past decade. A few years ago, I created Phobiia Films—my own production company and a space where I get to collaborate with artists I admire and bring my friends into the creative process. People often ask what makes my work different, and I never try to force an answer. I just put everything I have into my films and let the work speak for itself.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who taught you the most about work?
The biggest lessons I learned about work came from the people I grew up alongside. My friends in Slay Squad, Oddly Shrugs, and the 111 Collective and also both my parents helped shape my mindset and my approach to everything I do. Seeing their discipline, their creativity, and their relentless drive showed me what real work looks like. Their energy pushed me to raise my own standards and become the person I am today.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
As an artist or creative, there’s always that voice in the back of your head telling you to give up—the doubts, the fear of failure, the uncertainty. I’ve felt that many times throughout my journey, especially when projects didn’t go as planned or opportunities seemed out of reach. But I’ve learned to push through those moments, to trust my vision, and keep moving forward. That persistence is what has shaped me and led to the success I have today as a film director
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
That’s a funny question. Being in Los Angeles, people often create different versions of me based on their own experiences. But I can honestly say I always show my true self to everyone I meet—whether they see it or not. I’m genuine in everything I do, and as a good friend once said, “I know what I am”—and I feel the same way about myself
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace when I’m with my son. Beyond that, I find peace in the moments when I’m working on a set and watching one of my ideas come to life.
