Story & Lesson Highlights with BEX

BEX shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Hi BEX, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
I absolutely looove being in nature. Hiking gives me so much joy. Though my body will be tired and exhausted afterwards, my soul will be renewed. It keeps me sane.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m a producer, writer and singer. I live in LA but I’m originally from Switzerland. I’ve co-produced some of the music for the show The Mayans M.C. and have had some sync placements like Riverdale. I like to produce in all kinds of genres and love to blend them.
My main focus lately has been music production and vocal production, though I still write and sing from time to time. I like music production a lot because I get to dress up songs and make them come alive in a different way than if you just write them. I recently produced a song for Vo Williams called Vizionary. It was a very exciting song for me to work on. It’s a mix of genres and also a sound I don’t get to do as often as I wish haha.
For me the vocals are the most important part of a song, that’s why I enjoy vocal production a lot too. Making sure the vocals sparkle haha. I currently do a lot of vocal production for TIMMS, which is very fun to do.
If you would have to summarize me as a person and what I do I would say: I’m a Swiss Army Knife. Helpful and useful in many scenarios 🙂

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
I was a very distracted child. A little spaced out haha. I imagined a lot and was happy. I was very careful and wanted to do everything right. I was very slow in getting things done, not because I didn’t get it, just because I got distracted all the time. When I would write I would skip letters and whole words cause my brain was going faster than my hand could write…

What fear has held you back the most in your life?
The fear of not being good enough. I believed that what I do in music is connected to my identity. So if I sing a wrong note, write a bad song, or mess up a production it will show how bad of a person I am. That I’m not good enough and deserve nothing. Sorry if that went a bit dark there. But it’s the truth. And to be honest I’m still working through that fear sometimes. I got better at handling it but there are still moment when it is back taunting me. It also sometimes showed up in subtle ways, of like I’m not as good as others. And I think that is probably something a lot of people know the feeling of. It’s the same fear though. I’m not good enough. Success isn’t the answer to if I’m good enough or not. My identity should not be tied to my success in music.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
I like to think so haha. I try to be myself no matter what. Of course there are always things people don’t know about you when they meet you cause we have many layers. But I don’t change who I am in front of people or alone.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I’m definitely not doing what I was told to do. Cause it’s been hard and most people are probably wondering why the heck I’m still doing it. Does that mean I was born to do it? I don’t know. All I can say is I follow my heart and God. I have people that are very close to me and trustworthy and they help me too. Because what they say often resonate with what’s in my heart and what I believe God likes me to do next. These are people who would also tell me if I’m being an idiot. That’s why I trust them. I take a step at a time and try doors and if they open then I walk through them.
