Story & Lesson Highlights with ANSON of North Hollywood

We recently had the chance to connect with ANSON and have shared our conversation below.

Hi ANSON, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
Mornings are my reset button. I wake up, check my phone like everyone else, then say good morning to my wife and our dog. He’s always ridiculously stoked to wish us good morning which instantly puts me in a good mood. After that, it’s a quick walk and breakfast for him before I lace up for a three-mile run around the neighborhood. It’s my way of clearing my head and getting grounded before diving into the chaos of the day.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hey I’m ANSON, a music artist based in Los Angeles. I make alternative rock that blends elements of emo, pop punk, and pop (think guitars, feels, and introspection).

What makes my story unique is that I’ve always lived between two worlds: Eastern and Western culture (I’m American Jewish Chinese), artist and entrepreneur (I run my own business and handle everything myself while also being an artist), chaos and control (my personality swings between structure and spontaneity). That duality shows up in my music: emotional yet precise, raw but intentional. It’s the tension that drives everything I create.

I built this project from the ground up: writing, producing, marketing, and managing everything myself which makes every release feel deeply personal. Right now, I’m working on new music following my latest single, “Up All Night”.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who taught you the most about work?
Definitely my dad. He came from nothing in China and built a life here through pure perseverance and grit. Growing up, he always emphasized the importance of work to me. Not just working hard, but staying adaptable and persistent.

He’s had to reinvent himself multiple times, taking on different careers and challenges, and watching that taught me how to roll with the punches and keep pushing forward. That resilience and agility are things I’ve carried into my own journey as an artist and entrepreneur.

Do you remember a time someone truly listened to you?
One moment that really stuck with me was when a close friend confided in me about being in serious debt. They were overwhelmed and didn’t know where to start. We sat down together, went through their finances, and built a plan to get back on track. They trusted my advice and actually stuck to it and now, a few years later, they’re debt-free and growing their savings. Seeing someone take control of their life like that reminded me how powerful listening and genuine support can be.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
One lie is: “If the music is good, it will find an audience.” I’ve always wanted to believe that, but the truth is I know hundreds of incredible artists with amazing music who barely get heard. Talent alone rarely breaks through anymore; success today depends just as much on consistency, marketing, and storytelling. Great songs die every day because they weren’t marketed well. I wish that wasn’t true, but it is.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace in three moments. Performing music in front of a crowd, when everything just clicks and you can feel the energy move through the room. Sitting on top of a mountain watching the sun set and everything goes quiet. Or cuddling my wife and our dog before bed. Those are the times I feel completely grounded like everything in life makes sense.
