Story & Lesson Highlights with Akili Nkosi of Los Angeles

Akili Nkosi shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Good morning Akili , it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
As a US Navy sailor, I am finding lots of joy in conceptualizing and creating images when I am not occupied with military work. Spending extended periods of just fantasizing does wonders to my psyche to keep me motivated.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Akili Kenyatta Nkosi, and I am a photographer, model, dancer, performer, and fashion enthusiast. I created the brand “happyassblackboi” in 2020 as an extension of myself for photographic services as well as modeling. The name represents a sunny attitude I have, as well as a youthful sentiment where I became inspired by art in my early years of life. Finally, I included my blackness as a bit of existentialism that brings me to celebrate my ancestors and myself. In order for me to give myself permission to create, I remind myself that the goal is to always be happy and free.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
I can truthfully say that all of my teachers in life have seen my intentions and ambitions before I ever could. I always wondered and had questions, and they answered each of them and even guided me to opportunities I never knew existed. One of the first programs that always has a wonderful roster of teaching artists is Inner-city Arts. Not only did they give me resources to achieve any ideas I had, but provided professional expertise on the impact I could have with my creations. I feel as though all of my teachers knew that I am the person that is dedicated to learning more about this world, and is never afraid to experience with others. I never knew that about myself, but I am thankful for all of my teachers from Inner-city Arts to Academy of Arts University for showing me the mirror, the projector, and the paintbrush.

What have been the defining wounds of your life—and how have you healed them?
Ahh, the wounds. Not just the cuts and scratches, but the deep and visceral wounds that were intended to keep me from progressing. The harshest experiences I have ever had come from times people took advantage of my pure intentions. I have had people gut me for wanting more for myself, and they were afraid that my authentic attitude would never be accepted from the universe, but I believe I had to face negativity head on to show that faith and positivity shines on. I healed from those experiences by not only reminding myself of what has happened, but sharing the stories with anyone who may be facing the same negativity. I truly believe that standing firm in truth and faith can bring wonders to healing even the bloodiest wounds.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What important truth do very few people agree with you on?
I think that in this beautiful world lies unfairness, constant bloodshed, lies, and pure negativity, but I believe that with grit and boldness this world is a perfect place for healing, respect, and freedom if you always search for it. Your life will always be what you make it, and I work hard everyday to make sure that I’m made my life a fulfilling one.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: If you laid down your name, role, and possessions—what would remain?
What would remain is a molten ball of fire, which would represent the passion, courage, and love I will always have.
