We recently had the chance to connect with Abimael Acosta and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Abimael, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What is a normal day like for you right now?
I usually start my day between 7:30 and 8:00 in the morning. After getting up, I take a shower, do yoga, sometimes meditate, and then check my calendar for the day’s activities. Among the things I do is review the activity on my social media accounts and check my emails. Then I respond to emails or send work proposals for the projects I am currently working on. After that, I dedicate time to writing the project or projects I am working on, as well as creating and managing the social media content I am developing. I take a break for breakfast around 11:00 a.m., and I have lunch around 3:00 or 4:00 p.m. In the evening, I exercise, then watch some news or TV, and read about political and social topics or the book I am currently enjoying.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Abimael Acosta, and I’m a writer and content creator with roots in Puerto Rico, currently based in Los Angeles and frequently working in New York. I specialize in TV, film, theater, radio, and literary projects, always focused on storytelling that reflects social issues, politics, and human experiences in authentic and compelling ways.
Right now, I’m focused on two projects that are particularly close to my heart. The first is my novel Wizards, a thriller-suspense story recently published and now being shared through a series of live presentations across Puerto Rico, including San Juan, Mayagüez, and Ponce. These events are a unique chance to connect with readers, discuss the story, and celebrate the book.
The second project is the musical I Am Sylvia, telling the inspiring story of transgender activist Sylvia Rivera. We are running a GoFundMe campaign to bring this musical to life, and every contribution directly supports the production, helping us amplify Sylvia’s story and impact.
What makes my work unique is the combination of creativity, social consciousness, and a commitment to storytelling that resonates across different audiences and locations, from Puerto Rico to Los Angeles to New York. Whether through novels, live presentations, or theater, my goal is always to entertain, provoke thought, and inspire action.
I invite everyone to discover Wizards and to join us in supporting I Am Sylvia, together, we can celebrate stories that matter and make a meaningful difference.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
A moment that truly shaped how I see the world was experiencing my father’s illness and eventual passing from cancer. Witnessing his struggle and facing the reality of his mortality profoundly transformed my perspective on life. It was a painful and deeply personal journey, but it ultimately taught me invaluable lessons about the brevity and fragility of our time on this earth.
Through that experience, I realized that while planning and preparing for the future is important, it cannot replace the necessity of fully living in the present. Life is fleeting, and happiness is not something we should postpone or take for granted. I learned to cherish moments with loved ones, to embrace joy in the everyday, and to approach life with greater intention and gratitude.
My father’s passing instilled in me a deep understanding that life is a gift, and that the quality of our days is measured not by achievements alone, but by the meaning we create and the love we share. Since then, I strive to live with presence, to pursue experiences that bring fulfillment, and to honor the delicate, beautiful impermanence of life.
When did you last change your mind about something important?
The last time I changed my mind about something important came after working for more than a decade at a television channel in a creative writing role, but primarily focused on sales, promotions, and administrative tasks. Over time, the company underwent changes that ultimately forced me to leave.
At that moment, I realized something fundamental: the most important asset I had was my own voice, my ideas, and my creativity. They were the true driving force behind who I was professionally as a writer. From that point forward, I understood that I needed to focus on projects that would strengthen and showcase my personal brand—my voice, my ideas, and my name.
This shift in perspective led to real changes in the direction of my career. I began pursuing opportunities that allowed me to fully express my creativity and build a body of work that reflects who I am as a writer. It was a turning point that taught me to prioritize authenticity, ownership of my work, and the value of leveraging my unique voice.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
I strive to be as genuine as possible between the public version of myself and who I truly am. There have been times when some people advised me not to be so transparent or vocal about my ideas in the media, but I firmly believe that when you choose to be a voice that can influence others—which is an essential part of my work as a writer—being transparent about who you are and what you stand for is crucial.
I am someone who believes it is far better to have a community of people who follow you because they appreciate what you do, rather than doing things simply to please others. We will never be able to please everyone, and in trying to do so, we risk losing authenticity and honesty. Staying true to yourself, even if it’s not always popular, is the foundation of meaningful work and genuine connection.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
That Abimael Acosta lived with unwavering integrity and boundless passion. Guided by a deep sense of justice and equality, he dedicated his life and art to shaping a better world. Through his writing and creativity, he challenged, inspired, and left a lasting mark on society, reminding us of the power of truth, compassion, and the human spirit.
