Ruksana Hussain of Hollywood on Life, Lessons & Legacy

Ruksana Hussain shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Ruksana, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
Coffee, crossword puzzle, conversation.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am the author of the award-winning book Around the World in Los Angeles published by Reedy Press – the book covers 75 different communities in the city and ways to experience them through art, crafts, festivals, performances, outdoor activities, etc.
I am the publisher and editor of the award-winning magazine Traveler and Tourist – a quarterly subscriber-driven global digital travel and lifestyle outlet with video and audio content, and a focus on culture and cuisine. (currently on hiatus, relaunching in 2026)
I am an award-winning journalist, writer, and editor with print and online media outlets, regionally and globally, for consumer and trade audiences, covering diverse industries including travel, lifestyle, small business, education, construction, technology, etc.
I am a podcast guest, panelist, and speaker on the topics of freelancing in the media publishing industry, women’s entrepreneurship, being a solopreneur, working with editors and writers, starting and succeeding in the media world, and other related areas.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
That I have to live by the rules my family or society has set for me.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
You do not have to please others to be the person you want to be.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What’s a belief you used to hold tightly but now think was naive or wrong?
That success is tied to societal status.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
Every. single. day.
