Rising Stars: Meet Velia De Iuliis of Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Velia De Iuliis.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My story has always centered around a love for nature and a drive to express it visually. For my thesis in college, I found myself fascinated with the origins of western medicine and what components within medication are derived from flora and fauna. Through my studies, I created a series of paintings depicting species that help heal our ailments. This was the catalyst for my continued exploration of the relationship between art and ecology.

Over time, my work evolved into detailed paintings, focusing on both thriving and endangered species as a celebration of natures resilience. This focus has opened the door to murals, collaborations, and projects that merge visual storytelling with environmental awareness.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t been a smooth road, but those challenges have been essential to my growth. Early on, I took on projects that while valuable, left me feeling taken advantage of due to my inexperience. These moments led me to dive into contracts and legal agreements as a way to protect my work. I learned that once you establish your creative worth and set clear boundaries, people take you more seriously and respect you professionally.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I focus on capturing the vibrancy and interconnectedness of the natural world, with a particular emphasis on endangered plants. For my studio work, I love using gouache on canvas as it is rich in pigment while maintaining a flat finish. I also paint large scale murals using house paint which is incredibly physical yet liberating and allows me to connect to all kinds of people and cultures which I deeply appreciate.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
I’ve been incredibly fortunate to have the support of people who believe deeply in what I do. My parents have always played a foundational role. From an early age, they nurtured my curiosity and made space for creativity to thrive. They encouraged the pursuit of an art carrier even when I doubted it was the right path for me. Additionally, my husband has been a constant source of encouragement and someone I can problem solve with. I really appreciate having a common understanding of what it means to be an artist and the challenges our respective carriers presents.
