Rising Stars: Meet Susan Louise O’Connor

Today we’d like to introduce you to Susan Louise O’Connor.

Hi Susan Louise, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I fell in love with acting at age seven. I started creating plays with my stuffies in the backyard and have upgraded to collaborating with amazing artists across the county. I have a degree in performance and moved to New York City with two suitcases, no professional contacts and a boatload of determination. I did a lot of plays in downtown NYC theaters with wonderful people and occasionally a random rodent. I made my Broadway debut in Noel Coward’s Blithe Spirit with the amazing Angela Lansbury, which was a dream come true! The National Tour of the show brought me to Los Angeles. It’s exciting to be in a city filled with so much film and television talent. I love the sunshine, the incredible views and the possibility that soon I will be a regular on a sitcom.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s hard for me to imagine a smooth road in the entertainment business. There are so many things that stand between an actor and achieving their dreams. But I can’t fathom doing anything else. And the more speed bumps I encounter, the more I recognize that it’s about the work that you do have and making it the best that you can. I can only control what I put out there, not what I didn’t book or the rooms I’m not in.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I gravitate to characters who are complicated, vulnerable and perceived to others as ‘out there’. Also, I’ll do just about anything to make you laugh. I recently made an all improvisational feature film called HER and HIM that I’m incredibly proud of. It took a long time to make but it feels so real and risky when you watch it and I felt very free while acting in it. I believe that vulnerability is a superpower and I’m trying to cultivate that ability in my work.

How do you think about happiness?
This is a great question. Thank you for the reminder to check in about this. Things that make me happy: making people laugh, being part of a creative team, a good story, dogs, being outside, great friends, my family, nachos, hope, hiking, songs by Phoebe Bridgers, yoga, giving compliments and authenticity.
