Today we’d like to introduce you to Ron Placone.
Ron, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I did stand-up comedy on a whim around 2007. I didn’t really know what stand-up comedy was or that there was any type of career path in it. I just knew it was something I wanted to do and I got hooked pretty quickly. Before that I was dabbling in trying to be a writer but I was fairly young and all of my stuff was just derivative of something Chuck Palahniuk had already done…twas kind of a trend at the time.
Thousands of shows later and I’m still at it. I live in Los Angeles, the San Pedro neighborhood to be exact, and I’m currently (as of the writing of this) amidst a run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival with my newest stand-up hour, “Anti-Fascist Pasta Night.” It is, by far, my favorite stand up hour that I’ve ever done.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I don’t think any creative endeavor is a smooth road, but it’s been a fun one. I spent a good handful of years on the road 40 plus weeks a year as a stand-up. Eventually I wound up in LA to get into writing and film. Gigs have come and gone, there have been good years and bad ones, but through thick and thin the good has outweighed the bad.
There’s been tons of heartbreak along the way. Shows change without you, money comes and goes, opportunities that never come to fruition, empty promises that were never meant to be kept, same story everyone has in this crazy little thing called show business.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a comedian and I make anti-capitalist content amidst a society on the decline. I have a movie out called Left At Wall, a podcast called 1000 w/ Ron Placone, and my newest stand-up hour is called Anti-Fascist Pasta Night. I also do a livestream about news and politics called Disinfo Detox with an academic named Nolan Higdon. You can find everything at my website, ronplacone.com.
It’s hard to say that I’m most proud of one thing. I was very proud of the movie we made, the play we produced that will be released as a film soon, and I’m beyond stoked for the new stand-up show. I’m a variety is the spice of life type creator, so I can’t really pick one. I guess more than anything, I’m just happy to still be at it.
What matters most to you?
Love. Because without it nothing else matters.
