Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Stevenson.
Hi Kevin, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Growing up, I always felt the movie industry was out of reach. It wasn’t until I took a handful of internships, that I realized there is pathway for me to break in. I started shooting promos for shows like Dancing with the Stars and American Idol. This was a great opportunity for myself right out of college.
And as more opportunities to shoot short films and music videos were presented to me, I chose to become a full time freelancing filmmaker. Working as a camera operator on shows like National Geographic’s Breakthrough. I had the privilege of watching amazing directors such as Ron Howard and Brett Ratner.
This spawned my confidence to direct my first of 7 feature films in 2016.
The big milestone for me, was selling my first feature film. I met so many distributors at the American Film Market, which allowed me to find financing easier going forward.
Flash forward to today, where I’m fortunate to be in pre-production to direct my 8th feature film titled Black Site. Produced by Cinema Epoch.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I would say it has been a smooth road because I’ve had such a great group of filmmakers helping me along my journey. I have an immense sense of gratitude for everyone that has helped me along my voyage in LA, that I always seize the moment to pay if forward.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I would say I’m most for my movie Baby Girl. It seems to have built a big following. Alongside that, I’m probably most known for my guerilla filmmaking style. And this is why I have named my company GoReelLA Media. I take on big and small budgets, and I try not to compromise.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
I’ve had so many cinematographers that have taken me under their wing over the course of my career. These relationships have allowed me to hone in on the craft, to make it better and efficient.
