Rising Stars: Meet Annika Burns of South Bay

Today we’d like to introduce you to Annika Burns.

Hi Annika, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I had the love of photography since I was a teenager. I rarely was without a throwaway camera. Once I moved out to LA, I had a few years in the acting industry but my heart wasn’t there. It was when I was looking through the lens I realized I was on the wrong side of the camera and my true passion was photography. Throughout the years I’ve learned the art of photography through photographers I’ve shot with as well as classes, true life experience, and my editor/mentor Amber Karrels Photography. I love the creativity it entails as well as the long lasting relationships I have with my clients. The majority of my work has been in family, headshots, maternity, and lifestyle photography.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Photography is a difficult industry now because of what cell phones can do in terms of photography well as a.i. However, I think there is something special about just having “old school” photos done. Those playful family moments can’t be captured with you in them if you are taking the photos!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I shoot outdoor photography in the South Bay. I love capturing families, maternity, engagement, headshots and just a photoshoot for fun aka you! I also have a background working as a matchmaker in the matchmaking industry so if you are looking for a photographer to capture the best shots for your profile, I would love to help out! (Fun fact: I met my husband on Eharmony) I am proud of the growth my business had within the last year. I love when my clients come back to me during the year for other shoots as well as recommending me to others. It shows they really loved their photos and interaction with me.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
Good luck is when you capture that “magical” moment, having the perfect lighting, and the client who refers you to friends & family. These moments tend to happen more often when I’m putting my photography business out there- sharing my work, networking and improving my craft.
Of course, “bad luck” also happens- whether it is rain canceling a planned session or the slow season where work dries up. This pushes me to adapt and come up with new marketing ideas and scouting new locations to shoot at to draw the client in.
