Meet Vincent Vu of Dynamic Mixing Productions in Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Vincent Vu.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My starting point was when I first moved to Los Angeles to attend Musicians Institute as a guitarist. Originally I was enrolled in the Bachelors of Music program but decided to spend the first six months in the Audio Engineering program while interning at Atlantic Records. After those six months were over, I knew I wanted to be a mixing engineer, so I decided to opt out of the music program and continue working my way up in this industry.

As I worked my way up in Atlantic Records and ended up as an Assistant Engineer, I decided to seek work for someone who was freelancing as a mixing engineer. Typically Mixers end up as freelancers, so I wanted to see first hand what it would take for me to reach that point. After three months of searching, I eventually I met who would be my mentor, and took me in as his Assistant Mixing Engineer.

I worked under him for about two years where he helped me get my first three Grammy nominations. I learned a lot from him, but after two years I knew it was time for me to try and develop my own clients and start my journey as a freelance mixing engineer.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
If you’re looking to work in the music industry, the road will never be smooth. Many of the struggles came in the first few years for me. Climbing the ladder from being an intern to assistant engineer etc. took a lot of time and sacrifice.

Hours were always long, days started at 11 pm and almost always ended around 5 am while only getting paid less than minimum. Figuring out how to balance my schedule early on in my career between mixing, searching for new clients, and life itself was always a challenge. With that said, tough times make tough people.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I specialize in Mixing, which is one of the three main components in post-production for music. I mix down all the individual instruments, vocals, and drums in a record and make sure the quality of the record sounds polished and ready for radio or streaming platforms.

Being nominated for three Grammys is definitely something to be proud of, however, I’m most proud of the progress that different artists I’ve been working with such as van Jamme, Amon and others have had, and who have come a long way from the first time I met them till now.

I wanna make sure any of the artists or producers who I’m working with are in a position to succeed. It’s easy to mix, get paid, then talk to a client until they need more work. I wanna make sure to help any of the closer artists or producers I’m working with to succeed in other areas. That’s what separates me apart from others.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up I wasn’t the most social person, didn’t have too many friends back in my hometown but had a lot of families that I’m thankful for. I’ve always been interested in music since I was about 14 years old when I first started learning to play the guitar.

That point in my life was the start of working in this music industry for me. It was hard working on music in a place where others didn’t strive to work on music, but once I was settled in Los Angeles, it was easy making friends with others who shared the same goals and ambitions.
