Meet Senaida Ng

Today we’d like to introduce you to Senaida Ng.

Senaida Ng

Hi Senaida, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
When I was four years old, my parents put me into piano lessons at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, Canada, where I grew up. I trained as a classical pianist for 16 years, where I also learned several other instruments, such as alto saxophone, percussion, and guitar. I began composing music at the age of six, first by hand and later using software. I felt limited in classical composition so in high school, I taught myself how to produce music by watching YouTube videos. I wrote and released my first EP, “First Love,” in 2020. That same year, I moved to New York City to attend the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music at NYU where I released a second EP and founded a music-neurotechnology startup, researching the use of brainwaves to make music. I was exposed to the intersections of art and technology, which inspired me to further develop my artistry using emerging technologies such as AI, 3D animation, and mixed media. I found myself gravitating more towards the role of being a creative director and worked on several collaborative art installations with my friends. At the same time, I began researching and archiving records from early female electronic music pioneers such as Suzanne Ciani, Laurie Anderson, Wendy Carlos, and Pauline Oliveros. In 2022, I studied abroad in Berlin, Germany, where I was exposed to the experimental arts and performance scene there. I felt very inspired during my time there and also discovered my love for techno and rave culture. I started learning how to DJ and made my debut on Refuge Worldwide in December of 2022. When I came back to NYC in 2023, I founded my own interdisciplinary artist collective, WE ARE THE FUTURE!, bringing together artists and topics that really interested me in regards to creating sustainable technologies and ecosystems in the arts. We hosted a series of techno art parties throughout NYC and Brooklyn, experimenting with collaborative mediums and interactions at these events. Currently, I’m working on my debut full-length album, KUNST KAPUTT, which was largely created during my time in Berlin. This audio-visual album is a culmination of all my ideas thus far, combining the sounds of ambient and techno music, and will feature an immersive VR experience and a custom web-based music streaming experience utilizing TRINITI AI, designed by the team behind Grimes’ project, ElfTech.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Throughout the last four years of my college experience, I have struggled with finding my “thing.” I knew that I was passionate about music and the arts, and it had been my dream to come to music school, but I was interested in so many things that I couldn’t pick one thing to master. I felt like a “jack-of-all-trades, master of none,” and I felt like I wasn’t moving in any direction because I was spread so thin. However, this year, I have seen all of my past experiences and interests coming together more cohesively than I could ever imagine and I’m so grateful to have had all the opportunities to experience so many different things. I am now obsessed with the idea of being a multidisciplinary artist because I hate putting myself into a box or genre. My work focuses on experimentation and pushing the boundaries of different mediums to innovate and re-imagine what art can be.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am an interdisciplinary artist, sound architect, DJ, community curator, cyberfeminist, and creative technologist. My work focuses on one guiding question, which is, “HOW CAN WE CREATE TRANSCENDENTAL COLLECTIVE EXPERIENCES THROUGH SUSTAINABLE ART AND TECHNOLOGY?”

Through my music, installation work, and curated experiences, I explore this topic from a multi-faceted angle with the spirit of collaboration at the center of everything. Art is an exchange of ideas and conversations which flow into a larger ecosystem, and I want to position myself as a leader in this regard. I am constantly pushing the boundaries and limitations of what is possible through my art and exploring ideas of what the future can be. I’m deeply inspired by the women who pioneered electronic music, and I see myself in many ways as a pioneer in the intersections of arts and technology while always fostering an inclusive and diverse collective of voices. I’m most proud of my artist collective and label, WE ARE THE FUTURE! because I’ve been able to see the direct impact it has had on the people around me. I love seeing artists connect at our events and go on to collaborate on their projects, and inspiring people to create their own communities using the same model. We are driven by the idea of collaborative art-sharing and showcasing the process of the work. My hope is to someday take WE ARE THE FUTURE! around the world, especially to smaller communities who don’t have safe spaces for free expression and collective artmaking.

What’s next?
This summer, I will be graduating from the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music and going on to pursue a master’s degree at NYU’s Interactive Media Arts Low Residency program. My goal is to travel and collaborate with more artists around the world and explore new cultures. I’m really excited to be putting out my album, KUNST KAPUTT, and sharing the process of this journey with my audiences!
