Meet ROBERT BAXT of Culver City

Today we’d like to introduce you to ROBERT BAXT.

Hi ROBERT, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I am originally from Brooklyn, New York. Growing up there in the 1970’s there was a magic shop that had been around for 100 years. It had previously been owned by Harry Houdini himself, but after Houdini’s death, in the 1930’s it was purchased by a magician named Al Flosso, who was still there and running it in 1976 when I wandered into it. Al was 80 years old with gusts up to 90. He was like Yoda to me and taught me a lot of what I know about magic and a lot of what I know about life. Al was a former Carny who worked in Coney Island and Coney Island was where I grew up decades later.
I performed magic tricks to earn extra money starting when I was in Junior High School and made enough money to put myself through college and then law school. But at the same time that I graduated Law School with a Juris Doctorate, the Bar Exam was scheduled AND there was also an international competition for magicians, the Olympics of Magic, held only once every 3 years in Europe and run by the Federation Internationale Societe du Magique, or FISM for short. I skipped the Bar Exam because I know I could take it again in a few months, and went to FISM where I was awarded a Trophy for Comedy Magic and began a career performing internationally in many countries, plus appearance in Las Vegas, on Cruise Ships, Comedy Clubs, and TV. I have made my full time living as a magician all my life.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Show business has it’s ups and downs. High paying gigs where I’m flown around the world ( I can get by in multiple languages including Japanese, Spanish, and a few others) were sometimes interspersed with weeks and months of little work as the economy lagged during bad times.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a general practitioner of magic. I can do large coprporate events with sophisticated magic tricks, mind reading and mentalism; but also intimate close-up magic where I perform miracles inches from people’s eyes and right in their hands. I can also captivate children and family audiences with shows perfect for birthday parties and holiday events. And I also have special characterizations I do for Halloween and a different persona for educational themed shows in elementary schools where I use the tricks of my trade to demonstrate and teach principles of Science, Reading, and Math.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
You have to do this because you love this, not because you want to make money from it. Do it long enough and you will become a recognized master in your field and like me, lecture and teach the generations that are coming up behind.

Pricing:

  • Pricing depends on too many factors.
  • It’s like asking a wedding planner how much the wedding will cost without telling the wedding planner your vision for the event.
  • In this world where everyone is glued to their screens, my ability to do stuff live that in not AI, photoshopped, edited, or sweetened is a talent that commands a high price.
