Today we’d like to introduce you to Oladotun Idowu.
Oladotun, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Sisters In Media started in May 2016. The idea was to bring women of color in media together to build their network and relationships in the industry. It was an idea that came to me simply because of nepotism. I felt bitter about the concept and wished I had relatives and friends in media so that my experience would be slightly easier. I created Sisters In Media to be that outlet for Black and Brown women who could use more resources and support.
Has it been a smooth road?
No way! It’s definitely challenging building an organization. The biggest struggle I have is building a team that could put in the work. I personally have a hard time passing off projects so relinquishing control to others is tough for me. We’ve also had issues with finding the right partners for our initiative. The work has never been easy but has always been worth it.
Please tell us about Sisters In Media.
The purpose of Sisters In Media is to increase the presence of women of color in media while making a valuable contribution to communities and society at large. My role in the organization is to build partnerships with media companies and establish our programming. The thing I’m most proud of with Sisters In Media is the connections people make by attending our events. Once I had a young woman reach out and tell me thank you for putting on an event. She told me that because she went to the event, she met an executive at Disney and interviewed for a job then landed her first job in media. It was such a big moment for me.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I definitely see us taking a hybrid turn: creating in person and digital events. With the pandemic still going on, most event companies have made that same transition. In some ways, we feel like it’s such a disservice to not have in person events but in other ways, it’s been a great thing for us. We get to connect with members all over the nation, world because our events are virtual.
