Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Nope, becoming a dietitian is very competitive and challenging. Just being persistent and never giving up, always trying to be the best version of yourself, giving 100%.
Please tell us about Mor Levy RDN.
Pregnancy can induce many different issues such as: gestational diabetes, preeclampsia/eclampsia, inappropriate weight gain, disordered eating, insufficient intake of vitamins and/or minerals, nutrition related hormone imbalance, trouble sleeping, constipation, heartburn, headaches, nausea, and any gastrointestinal issues. As a Registered Dietitian my expertise lies in prenatal and postpartum visits, which include diet analysis, creation of meal plans, cooking classes, custom recipes and handouts, grocery and/or farmers market tours, and guidance in lifestyle changes; all of which are directly related to preventing or improving the previously mentioned health concerns.
While the journey of pregnancy is both personal to each woman and complex in nature, having the guidance of a registered dietitian can decrease complications. A previous client approached me at 15 weeks gestation during her second pregnancy with fear that she would have a similar experience to her first. During her first pregnancy she was placed on bed rest for three weeks, had increasing blood pressure levels, and was gaining an inappropriate amount of weight. These complications ultimately led to an emergency cesarean section with her infant spending two weeks in the NICU. In the beginning stages of her second pregnancy she continued to suffer from trouble sleeping, hypothyroidism, asthma, inappropriate weight gain, high blood pressure and excessive anxiety. After only three appointments, I implemented a healthy diet plan, exercise, and lifestyle changes. Furthermore, through medical nutrition therapy I was able to aid in the treatment of multiple vitamin/mineral deficiencies. My client was able to reach 39 weeks gestation and have a VBAC to a healthy baby, without the need of NICU.
Nutrition and lactation education play a significant role in both pregnancy and postpartum health. Research shows that lactation education during pregnancy can increase a woman’s success and confidence in breastfeeding, as well as improve maternal mental health, baby bonding, and limits postpartum complications. As a Lactation Consultant, I provide prenatal lactation classes, hospital visits for initial latch, and home visits as needed. Clients who seek consultation services receive education related to pumping and storing milk, baby positioning, baby behaviors, hand expressions, monitoring of infant weight gain via a specialized scale and other helpful tools to facilitate the breastfeeding process. As a Doula, I provide continuous physical, emotional, and informational support to the mother throughout the prenatal and postpartum periods.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My fondest memories are always of adventures with the family out in nature.
