Meet Madison Cunningham

Today we’d like to introduce you to Madison Cunningham.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I grew up in a musical family of five girls. My dad was a songwriter/guitar player who played in Church. He taught me my first chords when I was seven and about around that same time I started singing/writing. Nothing that I would ever sing today of course. Music was a hobby for me. I’m making a career of it wasn’t on my mind, but knew that I wanted to it to be a significant part of my life somehow. Flashing forward eight years, I was at the Namm show (of all places) in Anaheim when I met a producer/hero of mine named Tyler Chester. I was such a fan I was too nervous to ask him to produce anything of mine. So I didn’t. My Dad did. Naturally.

After recording my debut record with Tyler, I’ve went on to work with him or the last six years. He really became a mentor and friend who played a huge roll in who I am as an artist today. We’ve put out three projects together and are almost finished with my second full length. It’ll be my debut full length under Verve Records.

Please tell us about your art.
Music is a language that has the power to bond and unite and reunite another wise very somber and estranged culture. It’s the heartbeat of human nature and been the root of much joy and sadness in my life. Every time it’s felt too heavy or too much, there’s another reason to carry on with it.

If people walk away with the freedom to feel, or excitement to see themselves in a song, I feel as though I’ve done my job. A balm for the wounded, rest for the weary, release for the burdened.

What do you think is the biggest challenge facing artists today?
Sometimes it feels like there aren’t enough people out there to care about the art you’re making unless you’re swimming mainstream. It’s not true of course, but it’s a slower build that takes comrades and endurance. As a listener sometimes it takes far too long to find the gems of the music industry because it’s an endless buffet for consumers.

As much as I can feel down about it, I’m hopeful that good art will inevitably end up in the right hands!

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
You can find my music on iTunes or Spotify, or on whatever platform you prefer.

And one of the best ways to support is to come see a live show! I play in LA quite a bit and am just finishing a 33 date run with the Punch Brothers.

I’m a cranky old grunge guy from Seattle. Her music is amazing, like I haven’t heard in a very long time.
