Today we’d like to introduce you to Liz Robb.
Liz, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started as a fashion designer, eventually making my way to graduate school to study fibers. I started my fine art practice in San Francisco and eventually moved to Los Angeles, where I currently have my studio.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Starting my career as a fine artist has been the most challenging and rewarding experience of my life. Holding myself entirely accountable isn’t always easy; managing my time and balancing my life has given really taught me a lot about myself and how I function in my practice. Finding clients in the beginning felt vague and fruitless for a lot of the time- I had to keep pushing myself on my own deadline- creating art for art’s sake, not necessarily with a client in mind, which can feel isolating and very risky. Will it work? It’s honestly hard to tell most of the time, I just try to follow my intuition and recite my daily affirmations!
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
My company is my fine art business. I have exhibited my work both nationally and internationally, and have most recently completed a residency at the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft. I sell my work through galleries, art consultants, and through my studio. I’m available for commissions and have worked with both residential and commercial clients. I focus on my personal artwork, but I also find it incredibly rewarding working one on one with a client to realize a site-specific piece that exists in a world between minds.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Of course, hindsight would tell me to trust the process. Building a company is really difficult both mentally and physically, and I would’ve taken more time to process, be grateful, and lean into my life as a full time, working artist. I also would have searched for the perfect CPA when I FIRST started my business!
