Meet Lisa Budianto of Your Education Connection

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Budianto.

Lisa, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
After finishing college with a degree in Behavioral Science, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do, and I ended up taking graduate school courses in Education before earning my M.S. in Health Care Administration. I began working at a college, counseling students who consistently expressed frustration about feeling uncomfortable on the college campus. I soon realized that many of these students may simply have chosen the wrong type of college, and thought they might be happier if they had attended a different type of school. I wondered if I could somehow assist students in high school and help them choose the right type of college depending on their individual personality, learning style, and future education and career goals.

I became certified as an Independent Education Consultant and started Your Education Connection, a consulting practice based out of Huntington Beach, California. I enjoy the opportunity to offer advice and support to high school students and their parents as they navigate the college search, application, and admissions process, Working in private practice allows me to offer personalized services based on the needs of each individual client.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
There is no cookie cutter method when it comes to this process. Every student and family is different, and I approach each client with an open mind and tailor my services depending on their situation, needs, and goals. I recommend that students start the college search as early as possible! Some students begin working with me while they’re still in middle school, and this allows us time to search for the right college and explore possible majors and careers. I connect with my students often to ensure they are enrolled in academically challenging courses and engaged in extracurricular activities and volunteer/internships, while encouraging them to learn how to balance their lives by setting aside time for rest and relaxation, as well as time with their family and friends.

Please tell us about Your Education Connection.
For many high school students and parents, the college search, college application and college admissions process may feel daunting and overwhelming. As a certified Independent Education Consultant, I provide valuable support and guidance to high school students and their parents as they navigate through this process.

With specialized experience working with college students with disabilities as well as students accessing mental health resources, Your Education Connection may offer students advice and guidance before and even during their college experience to ensure that students are connected with the appropriate resources both on and off campus. Students may receive guidance on how to request necessary disability accommodations to ensure they have equal access to the curriculum.

I offer my clients an extremely personalized service, tailoring their sessions to focus on the individual needs of each client. My goal is to ensure that my students will not only be successful in finding the right college, but also offering them the tools they will need to be successful once they begin college. Improving their time management and study skills while in high school may help students make a successful transition from high school to college.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I soon realized that there is no cookie cutter method of helping high school students. Each student has different preferences and goals, and a variety of strengths and challenges which may affect how and why they choose to apply to a particular college. My services are personalized for each student, based on their personality, learning style, and career and educational goals, while also taking into consideration the family’s financial and personal circumstances. I often act as a mediator, facilitating tough conversations between teenagers and their parents. Planning for a student’s future after high school is a highly emotional topic for many students and their families!
