Meet Kingsley Amugo of Musty Records in South Bay

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kingsley Amugo.

Kingsley, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I would have to say my whole music journey started in the late 10th grade/ early 11th-grade year. When I attended Narbonne Highschool, my life from 9th to 11th grade was STRONGLY ALL ABOUT BASKETBALL. It was my first love at the time. So my days consisted of playing basketball at lunch and nutrition, then going straight to basketball practice after school for hours long.

But as I got into the 11th grade, I stopped loving the game as I used to because I felt deep down that I couldn’t be all of myself around my teammates. There was Nothing wrong with them, but I felt like I couldn’t connect with them on a deeper level) so that led me to dabble into production in my free time. As a kid, I always loved music; it always intrigued me how certain sounds sound the way they do, how drums sound the way they sound, and how a particular song can bring out so many emotions you thought you could never feel in life. With that said, I would consistently look up YouTube videos on “how to make trap beats on Fl studio” hahaha and study how producers would make beats. That routine lasted for about two months or so until I started sending out my beats to people.

Fast forward into my 12th-grade year, I had made up my mind that I would want to make my own “mixtape” consisting of all my homies on beats of mine to put out into the world, so that was my main focus throughout the summer of 2017. My first breakout musically was when I dropped my first ever single “Receipts” with my Close friend Gill who goes by the name “2dtheone” in September of 2017. Going into that drop, I was so nervous because this was the first time I was about to put something out solo so I didn’t know what to expect but the city LOVED IT. So many people reached out to me that day. My phone was non stop vibrating from all the love and support I was getting from my peers, which was such a beautiful feeling. This led me to finally dropping my debut tape “Stank Tape” in March of 2018, which opened up so many doors for me. Without me dropping those two things in my music career, I don’t think it would have been possible for me to throw my festival “Stank Fest” with people showing up, different artists trusting me to produce songs with them, or me being able to have a voice in Harbor City.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has NOT been a smooth road since I have started making Music. One of the main things that have always appeared to slow me down was getting beat block while producing/ putting myself down and thinking I’m not good enough. It is challenging to make beats while you scroll through Instagram and see a lot of other talented producers making crazy beats daily. So me constantly seeing that, I would always put myself down thinking I shouldn’t even be making beats since there are so many producers that are way more advanced than me. But a thing that made me come out of that negative way of thinking was always telling myself daily that you can’t become great overnight. People put in a countless amount of hours to reach the point that they’re at, so if I stay focused, keep grinding, and practicing on my craft daily, I can one day reach the potential they are at real soon.

Musty Records – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My company “Musty Records” is a collective/independent music label where I envision having many different things come out of it such as its own artists, radio station, Movie production, and clothing brand. I wouldn’t want to limit myself to just one avenue of art, so with this company I want to show the world that I can do so much more than just putting out music each year or be looked at as only a music producer. With this business, I want to give plenty of people jobs and opportunities to chase their dreams and accomplish the goals they have in life, which may have been Turnt down because it wasn’t “Realistic” to others.

I am an event coordinator where I specialize in booking venues for significant events, going out of my way to get equipment, reaching out to the artist to perform, and gathering up a team of people who could help me accomplish the goals I have in mind for the event.

I’m also a music producer where I am producing for different varieties of artists Plus an A&R where I lookout for talented creatives around the city.

The thing that I’m most proud of as a company is that I always stayed true to myself with my business. I never stepped out of my character to do something that I fully didn’t believe in because that isn’t in my nature. As long as I am making music, I would want to be remembered for being 100% me. I Wouldn’t want people to fall in love with certain parts of me or put on a front when the cameras aren’t rolling. So when people want to work with Musty Records, I want them to come in knowing that they are working with 100% genuine and REAL people at all times.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I define success off if I’m happy doing the things I love or Growing as a human/artist at the end of the day. When I first stepped into the music scene, it is heavily portrayed that success in the music industry is based on how many streams or plays your song will get, which damaged my way of thinking because I thought that was all it was about… But I was SO WRONG. As I continued to make music, I learned that the word success has to be what you make it, not what everyone generalizes it to be. To me, success is now Building relationships with an artist, learning and growing from the mistakes you made, improving your quality and making certain songs you thought you’d never make, staying true to yourself, and stepping out of your comfort zone! Big plays are cool and all, but I don’t mind if my songs don’t hit a high number of streams because deep down if I know that I improved my quality of music and people around me have seen me grow on things that I wasn’t as good at last year is the real “W” in my eyes.
