Meet Keila Stewart of HerrDezign in Downey

Today we’d like to introduce you to Keila Stewart.

Keila, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was born an entertainer. From age two, I was brought to “Hollywood” to pursue a career as a music artist- my brother and I. All though I was raised under the direction of and with many award-winning artists and entertainers to this day.

In the gospel genre, I was raised in Antioch Church of Long Beach, which is a church portrayed in a previous reality show called The Preachers of L.A. and was called Antioch Missionary Baptist Church at the time. In the neighborhood, we group up simultaneously with celebrities like Snoop Dogg, Warren G, and many others. My parents started us a record label called Funkhouse Records where some now-famous celebrities were aspiring to make it in the industry, such as Jamie Foxx, the late Yvette Wilson and Ricki Harris of the show Moesha, and many others.

At a young age, I was pushed onto a path that fit a gift that I was born with but was not given much choice of what path I would like to have taken for myself. This is when I discovered a love for drawing at age 13. I chose to go to college after having two kids and exhausting a music career, and I studied Graphic Design due to a lack of a fine arts program at the time. Not having much of experience with college at that time, I realized later that I had graduated with a B.A. in Visual Communications without proper accreditation for furthering my studies. It was then that I began being creative in visual arts and decided to work as a freelance independent company called HerrDezign.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Some of the struggles along the way is being the only artist for your own developing company because you have a desire to take on every order, but you can easily become overwhelmed. Multitasking is essential because you are solely the boss of your workload, hours, schedule, bookkeeping and advertisement. Advertisement can be tricky as well because you could get a rush of customers at once which strains deadlines, workloads, and productivity efficiency. My most difficult challenge is to maintain college studies leading me to a doctorate in Physical Therapy, as well as working in the entertainment business and ministry.

Please tell us about HerrDezign.
HerrDezign is simply myself as a freelance fine artist, graphic artist, and visual artist that currently specializes in logos and charcoal portraits. Once HerrDezign develops more, greeting cards and merchandise will be added to the list. HerrDezign is known namely for logos and portraits. The heart of the company is what I am most proud of. It takes the sentiment of each project very personal with sincerity. What sets HerrDezign apart from other artists is that I tend to grasp tightly to the essence of each person or business and manifests it visually. There is a candid ability to visually present the very mission statement and heart of each business or medium of each project. I am a purpose-driven company and I believe that each connection is divinely designed for a purpose for a soul.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memory from childhood is our family bond. We sang and toured together, but there was never anything as epic as being able to wake up each morning and laugh and tell jokes with your family for hours in pajamas.
