Meet Jessica Luong

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Luong.

Hi Jessica, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I took a general art class my freshman year of high school on a whim and a college rep from FIDM (Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising) came to my class with a graphic design prompt for us to try. Little did I know, I absolutely loved the assignment! I went on to do yearbook my senior year to dabble in graphic design. We took our own photographs from school rallys, sports games, lunchtime, etc. and used them to design the spreads we were in charge of. I graduated from FIDM with my AA in Graphic Design and went on to California State University, Fullerton to finish my BFA in Graphic Design and Interactive Art. I am currently a Freelance Designer working on projects and my Etsy store.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It was a bit of a confusing time when I finished my associate’s degree at 20 years old and not knowing what to do at such a young age. I was still learning how to be a young adult, yet I was fresh out of school in Downtown LA. A lot of the struggles was trying to figure out exactly what I wanted to do at a young age and learning to be independent! It’s been an exciting journey from a doe-eyed 18-year-old in Downtown LA to becoming a freelance Graphic Designer.

Becoming an entrepreneur and selling products is also a challenge. I’m self-teaching myself on how to be my own boss, learning marketing, finances, shipping and packaging items, contracts, and so much more! It’s a lot of information to learn when there isn’t a manual and “right or wrong” answer(s). It brings a lot of personal insecurities of comparing myself to people in the industry, trial and error, slow months, and the road bumps of being an entrepreneur.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a Freelance Graphic Designer that is currently learning how to be an entrepreneur. I’m most proud of being able to create products, such as stickers, that people are proud to show off on their water bottles, laptops, luggages, and more! It’s humbling when strangers find your work online and support you whether it’s through sharing social media posts, buying products, or sending sweet messages.

What makes you happy?
Experiencing new things that push me out of my comfort zone, being with my plants, and seeing people genuinely happy makes me happy. As I get older, I’m learning that it isn’t material things that make you happy. It’s experiences, adventure, nature, plants, and people. Being able to see plants grow in my care is so therapeutic. It also shows me that I can grow as a person if I keep giving myself as much love, care, and empathy that I put into my plants.
