Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Love.
Jennifer, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My creative spark definitely started when I was little. I used to chop up clothes I wasn’t supposed to touch and constantly got into trouble for it because I was convinced I was going to be a fashion designer. I ended up taking fashion design in high school and fell in love with it, but deep down, I felt like I needed something more for my future.
That shift happened when I enrolled in a film photography class right after. The entire darkroom process developing film by hand and seeing those beautiful images come to life completely opened my eyes. Suddenly, the phrase “a picture is worth a thousand words” wasn’t just a cliche anymore it meant everything to me.
After high school, I went straight into college and started taking art classes. That was a total revelation I realized I was actually really good at drawing, something I had never known about myself. I picked up painting and sold my very first piece for $300. I was absolutely thrilled.
That summer, everything changed. My best friend bought a Sony alpha7 III camera and loved to model. I was naturally super shy, but around her, I could completely be myself. We started trading off taking pictures of each other and she began nudging me to start modeling alongside her. Shortly after, she was diagnosed with stomach cancer. It broke my heart, and within six months, she passed away.
Devastated, I stepped away from the creative world entirely. I didn’t touch a camera or model for years.
Eventually, time passed and I found myself looking through old pictures of us, reminded of what a beautiful soul she was. To honor that spark she gave me, I decided to buy the exact same camera she had the Sony \alpha7 III.
At the time, I was single and needed a reason to get out. I started bringing my camera to local events and taking photos of lowriders. To capture the culture properly, I had to force myself out of my shell, walking up to strangers to ask for their portraits. That single leap of faith changed everything. I met incredible people, built real connections, and unlocked opportunities I never imagined.
Today, as a model, I’ve been featured with brands like FB County, Shaka Wear, and Lowrider Magazine, among others. And as a photographer, my camera comes with me everywhere I go. Looking back at where I started cutting up clothes as a kid I’m just deeply thankful for every opportunity I’ve had so far, and excited for everything still to come!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road, there have definitely been obstacles along the way. However, I’ve learned to navigate those challenges and keep moving forward. Thanks to my drive and a strong support system, I’ve been able to overcome those hurdles and focus on building a successful future.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a photographer, and mostly I just love capturing people and moments in a way that feels real. What sets me apart? Honestly, just being me. You don’t see a ton of female photographers to begin with, and as an Afro Latina moving through the Chicano community, I’m usually the only person in the room with my exact background. It hasn’t always been easy there’s definitely been some friction and moments where I had to fight to be taken seriously. But those experiences gave me my edge. I’m most proud that I stayed true to who I am, didn’t let anyone box me in, and built a style that’s completely my own.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
Technically, my mail goes to Perris, but my soul and my gas budget belongs to Los Angeles. What I love about Perris is that it’s great for sleeping and avoiding people. What I like least? Literally everything else, because I’m never there! LA is where the creatives thrive, the energy is alive, and I actually feel like I’m in my element. If you ever need to find me, just look for the girl in LA traffic driving back to Perris while questioning all of her life choices.
