Meet Jazmin Bryant of Monkeypaw in Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jazmin Bryant.

So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I have been storytelling using film and video since my childhood. I fell in love with the art form and have continued to gain knowledge on clean, aesthetically-pleasing filmmaking. To me the most valuable part of what I do is bringing visions to life with passion which also uplift underrepresented communities especially the black community.

I write, produce, direct, and edit as well. I have a lot of experience in various styles of filmmaking such as fashion, music videos, commercial work, short films, documentaries and more. I am interested in genres that shed light on social issues, supernatural/fantasy, satire and horror. My favorite kind of storytelling reflects topics such as ethics, race and morality to spread awareness and create conversation. Ultimately, I strive to use my art form as an opportunity to inform, connect and stand out.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As a young black creative, it is easy to get discouraged however with the current climate of our world it’s our time to shine! Many times I have been the only black woman in a room which in itself is discouraging however I always find the courage and strength to move forward by keeping my end goals in mind. Ultimately, I strive to produce and direct alongside like minded individuals such as Jordan Peele, Ava DuVernay, Donald Glover, Spike Lee, etc.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
Currently, I am interning for Monkeypaw in Hollywood however I freelance and do photography as well. Next year, I will launch my official camera/artistry bag collection. I am planning to create a multipurpose and fashionable bag for various artists and creatives alike. More details coming soon!  Also, this December my upcoming short film titled 71 Seconds will premiere in Chicago. 71 Seconds follows a black adolescent who spends a weekend with his dad in an unknown environment where the odds are against him because of how he’s perceived. In memory Trayvon Martin February 5, 2012- February 26, 2012.  Follow my IG to stay connected and in the loop!

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Through working in the industry, I can truly attest that being both kind and genuine will literally make people want to work with you! Sometimes pride and egos can get in the way of healthy great partnerships. Treat people the way you want to be treated and the sky is the limit.
