Meet Javier Granados of Dreamluxe in Downtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Javier Granados.

Javier, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started Dreamluxe Silk Scarves and Wearable Art in 2001 while traveling to exotic world locations.

I was born in Los Angeles, I studied Graphic design and Architecture. I ran an art gallery called Granados 2 Gallery in Atwater Village from 1993-1999, and I was painting on canvas. I’ve always loved fashion and wanted to make my artwork more accessible. I was looking for a way to transform my original paintings and digital art into wearable art.

While traveling in East Asia, I discovered the technique of Batik and immediately realized that this was the medium I was looking for to take my artwork into the streets. I eventually moved to Bali Indonesian and began a year-long residency immersed in mastering the technique of Batik.

Batik is a magical and historical method of hand painting fabric used for thousands of years. Batik is a long multi-step process that incorporates drawing the design onto the fabric than using hot wax to trace all the drawn lines with a wax pen tool. The wax acts as a resist to prevent the color dyes from mixing. The fabric is then stretched and carefully painted using special brushes.

After a day of drying the fabric is submerged into boiling water to remove the wax leaving a white outline where the wax was applied. Each piece takes many hours and days to complete. The final result is a unique one-of-a-kind wearable (and washable) work of art that can also be hung on a wall.

After years of using batik as my medium, I have created a unique style of designing silk scarves and wearable art while following the traditional techniques of batik. Dreamluxe is inspired by Art, Travel, Nature, and symbols created in the name of beauty, love, and life. My Studio/Showroom is located at the Brewery Arts Colony “the world’s largest artist community” in Los Angeles.

Has it been a smooth road?
Being an artist is never a smooth road. It comes with the territory. There are many challenges and obstacles along the way, too many to mention.

But in the end, I’ve become a better person because of them. Living a creative life is the only way for me. It has allowed me a window to inspire and make the world a better place.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Dreamluxe story. Tell us more about the business.
I create one of a kind hand painted silk scarves and wearable art. I specialize in using the ancient technique of Batik.

I’m proud that I have been creating my beautiful silk pieces for almost 20 years and each year they get better.

What sets us apart from others is our unique creative designs, craftsmanship, and high-quality silk and dyes.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I don’t see my type of work as an industry. Batik is an ancient and traditional way of painting on fabric — a slow art.

I see Dreamluxe continuing to create beautiful and long-lasting pieces that inspire beauty and love.
