Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Bunn.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Jasmine. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I have always been in the arts in some form. I attended an art high school in Charlotte, NC and then attended and graduated UNCC with a degree in choreography, theory and performance. From there, I spent another year in Charlotte before moving to Los angles. I have lived in NOHO for three years and I love it here. Pursuing dance has been hard but worth every step. Before moving here, I only heard horror stories of how you might not make it out here but I made a goal to prove those people wrong. I made amazing connections, I got signed, I’ve worked on jobs that I couldn’t of imagine and I found fitness! I never thought I’d end up falling in love with fitness the way I have but once I realized how important it was to my dance career, it was simple to keep up with.
My best friend and I were in the gym every day for over a year and within that year, I met a few more friends who were dancers mostly and interested in me training them. I had never trained anyone but I was willing to help teach what I have learned and it felt amazing. I was a dance teacher at home but I didn’t want to teach out here. I wanted to focus on my dancing but I would be lying if I said I didn’t miss it so it felt great to put my teaching skills to the test in a different way. At the time, I was working at a gym but only doing membership and when my manager found out I was training, she suggested I get my certification and start training there.
So that’s what I did and I loved it but my dance career started to get in the way of my gyms expectations after about a year so that’s when I decided to start JazzyBFit. I quit the gym and most of my clients came with me to train on my own accord. It has been so fulfilling for me to start something that didn’t know would be successful. I’ve been able to create a living for my self, unexpectedly. I love all my clients and the list keeps growing each month. I even released merch for the first time this past month. Personal training fell into my lap and became something I couldn’t imagine not doing now. My next goal is to get my own bigger training space and to eventually open a gym.
Has it been a smooth road?
The road hasn’t been exactly smooth for me but it could be much worse. The idea of personal training was presented to me so casually but the actual process of getting certified was the first struggle. It’s a simple idea but it’s still technically school all over again. There is a lot of information to take In when it comes to being a GOOD personal trainer. Anyone can temporarily retain info and get certified but it’s all about furthering your education even after that and being able to safely and intentionally help your clients reach their goals and beyond. The next struggle for me came with me quitting my gym job because I had to figure out where I was going to train and where I was going to find the money to get the equipment I needed. Lucky for me, I have amazing supporters in my life. My home studio from Charlotte opened a location here in NOHO, Fuzion Force LA.
I am the supervisor there at the studio and they allow me to keep my equipment there as well as use space for me to see my clients. It has worked out so far but I still do have a goal to get my own bigger space eventually. COVID was every persona trainers struggle as well because If you weren’t already training online or through FaceTime and video, then you needed to adjust that. I still do see about half my clients in person but the other half I FaceTime train now and it has worked out but it’s definitely harder to explain, demonstrate sometimes, see them, wifi issues possibly. Lastly, financially, no matter how much money I make as a trainer, it just makes me want to invest more in my business. So I have really managed my money and make sure I’m making the smartest decisions for my business’ sake.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
My business is called JazzyBfit. I am a personal trainer and I specialize in circuit training, functional training, weight loss, muscle gain and overall fitness. I am also in the process of getting certified as a fitness nutrition specialist so I’ll be able to give more educated nutritional advice. I have three fitness guides, an eight weeks full-body fitness guide that helps you lose the fat while gaining muscle and keeping your shape. I have a two weeks ab guide that helps you create a healthy habit towards training your abs. Lastly, a four weeks glute guide to help you grow and tone your glutes.
The thing that makes me the most proud of my business is that it has blossomed regardless of my career and other jobs. Pre- COVID, I was supervisor at Fuzion Force studio, I traveled to conventions with a clothing brand almost every weekend, I am a professional dancer and keeping up with my clients as a personal trainer. None of that has stopped me from pursuing this goal of mine. My clients are so understanding of my other obligations and I’m lucky for that but I feel like I could easily give up or put less effort into this because it’s obvious I could use a nap. But I see where this could end up, and that’s more worth it to me.
The 1st thing that sets me apart from other trainers is that 1, I really care about my education and my client’s education, making sure my clients feel comfortable with or without me. 2, working out can be boring, some trainers give you same exercises every time and don’t keep you interested. I keep the variety there so that each session gives you something to work out and work towards. Plenty of dancers need more than just the basics because dance is a sport in itself so we have to go above and beyond and that’s what I am here to give!
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I honestly think that LA is an amazing place to start a personal training business because we have a lot of people right now especially, who can’t go to a gym because none are open or because they don’t know what to do there on their own. Also, we have a lot of people in the entertainment industry who have to keep up with their fitness, so there is a need for personal trainers. I would recommend starting in a gym or in general having a mentor to help show you the ropes along the way. I got to shadow and observed other trainers and see what I liked or didn’t like about their training style and it has helped me decide what I wanted to be as a trainer.
