So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Ever since I was a young boy, I was fascinated by the natural world. My father used to take me out hiking through the emerald green mountains in Maine, showing me wild edible plants. For me it was like discovering hidden treasures. From that initial curiosity grew a desire to dive deeper and learn more. In college, I studied plant biology and ethnobotany, which is the study of how people use plants. Just out of college I got a job with the USDA and Bureau of Land Management in the Mojave Desert of California doing field botany which was amazing in its own right. However, I felt there was some human connection missing with the work I was doing. I wanted to find a way to combine my love of plants and the natural world with helping people. A fortuitous internet search lead me to the field of Naturopathic Medicine which was like discovering another hidden treasure. Naturopathic Medicine is the perfect blending of modern medicine with natural therapeutics like herbal medicine, nutrition therapy, homeopathy, chiropractic, etc. It was everything I’d ever dreamed of rolled into one profession.
Naturopathic Doctors are trained in standard medical practices like prescribing medications and minor surgery as well being trained as the experts in natural medicine.
Naturopathic Medicine offers an incredible array of healing therapies and modalities for those looking for a more natural approach or for those for whom conventional medicine wasn’t a good option.
I attended the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine in Tempe, AZ. After completing my schooling and residency, I stayed on at the college teaching and building a private practice. Ever since having lived in California I had a dream of opening a clinic in the southern California area. So in 2015 I partnered with one of the most amazing Naturopathic Doctors, Kelly Bender, and started the Pure Vitality Rejuvenation Center in the Brentwood area of Los Angeles.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Owning your own business is a beast. Especially in the beginning there were unexpected expenses that came up, difficulties with finding the right front desk support, and marketing was a challenge. Luckily for us we are located within a fantastic juice, smoothie, vitamin store called Earthbar, so we were able to tap into that captive audience who were already interested in health. But marketing beyond that was a challenge and continues to be something we refine in order to connect our clinic with the people who need it most.
Pure Vitality Rejuvenation Center – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
At Pure Vitality we us the most cutting edge natural therapies with the bed of modern medicine to customize treatments for each patient’s specific needs. There is no cookie cutter approach to this. Just as each person is a unique collection of thoughts, feelings, biology, biochemistry, etc, we feel you get the best results when your tailor the treatment. What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
We have been fortunate enough to have several patients trying to conceive get pregnant and have healthy babies under our care. I find that incredibly rewarding.
We’ve also had other clients who had undiagnosed cancer and we were fortunate enough to find it early so they could get life saving treatments.
A third point of pride for me was the years of teaching medical students to become the best doctors they can be. I feel that by extension of that work I am able to reach and help many more people than I ever could personally.
