Today we’d like to introduce you to Eshani Chandrashekar.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was born in India and moved to Dubai at the age of 10. I started singing when I was 13 years old and participated in various singing competitions. However, as time progressed, I stopped singing for a while due to bullying and that took a toll on my self-esteem. I began singing again in 2013. I started vocal lessons, took up opera singing and eventually completed grade 1 in Opera.
Shortly after, I decided to post a cover of “Stay” by Rihanna on YouTube and did my best to post as much as I could, which really wasn’t much until 2016. It was at that time that I remember thinking to myself, “I should really start writing my own songs.” So, I started work on my first single “Hazy” and released the song and accompanying music video later that year. Over the next two years, I continued writing originals and eventually released my first album in 2018.
To my surprise, “Hazy” as well as my second single “Babycakes” aired on Dubai’s most popular radio station, Virgin Radio. Virgin Radio had started supporting local talent and I was amongst the first people to be called for a feature. It was absolutely the best feeling ever! As time progressed, I got contracted to collaborate on a track for Armada Music, where Armin Van Buuren aired our track live on ASOT (A State of Trance). During this time period, I also got interviewed by Dance FM, an EDM based Radio station in Dubai, and later performed at the Dubai Jazz Fest, opening for Duran Duran.
I am now currently pursuing my dreams in Los Angeles, where I am enrolled in Musicians Institutes vocal performance program. I will be releasing a new single titled “Better than you” in the near future and I would consider this single to represent me, raw and brutally honest with myself as an artist/singer-songwriter.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It hasn’t been all smooth sailing for sure. Moving from India, and growing up in Dubai, I never really felt like I fit in. Music was never a topic of passion back in school in Dubai. I was bullied and told not to sing. I remember someone telling me that I sounded like a “goat” when I sang, that hit me hard. People don’t easily forget these things. But when you’re being told that you’ll never be good enough, you move on and focus on doing what you love. However, I still found it difficult to pursue music in a place that didn’t have an acceptance for the type of music I wanted to create. I remember feeling extremely neglected when I didn’t get support for the music that I put out.
Even when I moved to Los Angeles in December of 2018, I struggled for about nine months. Sleeping in an unsanitary small space wasn’t ideal, but it was a learning lesson nonetheless. I’m happy to say that I’m in a better place now.
Everything I have achieved has been fueled by the love and support of my family. Honestly, outside of my family, I felt as if I had nobody who believed in my art or even me for that matter. It was hard being shunned away and told that I wasn’t good enough. But, I’m grateful for everything and especially those people who helped me get to where I am today. I strongly believe and I always say; “Believe in yourself, even when no one else will”.
Eshani Music – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am a vocal recording artist, best known for my voice and style of songwriting. I believe what sets me apart is my ethnic background, and ability to relentlessly pursue my passion while incorporating my diverse cultural experiences. My proudest achievement would have to be my first album release and getting signed on the track to Armada Music.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success, to me, starts with the little things in life that you achieve like writing a song or humming a tune. Every step you take matters and it’s usually easier said than done. Success to me is defined by the amount of hard work, perseverance, and determination one has. Never giving up is key! The little steps that you take help you to achieve greater things for yourself. When you learn, you grow. That is success.
