Today we’d like to introduce you to Erin Micklow.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Since 2007, I have been working in the entertainment industry in Los Angeles as an internationally published model and SAG/AFTRA actress, where I styled my wardrobe, hair and makeup on 95% of the projects I worked on. With experience being on both sides of the camera, looking good has been my job and my passion for many years.
In 2008, I began my path a wardrobe stylist when I was hired to assist teach at dating workshops for men. I was hired to give the woman’s point of view while the host of the workshops gave the in-depth advice. I advised on the way the men looked in relation to how they appealed to women, and the men who were open to improving themselves hired me for image consulting & personal shopping sessions outside the workshops where I taught them how to dress.
In 2013, I branched out on my own as an independent stylist and image consultant putting looks together for clients for film, music videos, editorial photo shoots, as well as red carpet events.
My styling work has been featured on The Hollywood Reporter, Variety, The Insider, TMZ, Entertainment Tonight, UsWeekly, Yahoo!, AOL, Huffington Post & MTV. Among my services outside of entertainment jobs, I offer personal shopping trips, outfit planning, closet raids, & travel packing. I have also authored numerous fashion columns giving tips & advice for publications such as Naluda Magazine, Radiant Inc Magazine, DirtyandThirty.com, CafeYak.com, TheStyleGlossy.com & AngryYoungandPoor.com.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I love my job & helping people look their best, but the most difficult time was definitely starting my business as an independent stylist. In the beginning, it was difficult to get my name out there because I was just starting out & didn’t have a strong portfolio of work yet. Building a business from the ground up is tough.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Erin Micklow Stylist – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I’m a full-service wardrobe stylist, image consultant, costumer & sometimes designer. Clothes are my life & I love putting looks together for clients, manipulating clothing to transform a piece that isn’t working into something that is, and helping to build a character through their wardrobe.
On the image consulting side, I offer personal shopping, outfit planning, closet raids & traveling packing. Closet raids are basically an assessment of a client’s current wardrobe – what should stay & what should be ditched & donated, pieces that might be missing to make complete outfits from existing wardrobe & getting a feel for the client’s current style so we can take that & improve on it.
In an outfit planning session, I help the client mix & match pieces to make complete outfits when they aren’t quite sure what goes with what. This is a lot like mathematical combinations where we’re deciphering how many different outfits we can make with a person’s wardrobe.
In traveling packing, I take the stress off my clients of what to pack for a trip & help them plan their outfits for where they’re going. It can be overwhelming packing so many looks at one time!
And in personal shopping, we shop based on the client’s needs, whether that be a full wardrobe overhaul, just a refresher to get some new pieces in their wardrobe rotation, or something like shopping for some looks for an upcoming vacation.
On the entertainment side, it’s a completely different world. Most wardrobe is loaned or rented, and the pieces that are bought and altered are usually kept by the production companies. For red carpet styling, I usually pull several looks & the talent tries them on & we discuss the options & choose the best one for them. With TV, film, music videos & editorial, the wardrobe is run by the directors, producers & editors as I’m pulling before the shoot day. Budgets can be tighter on entertainment related projects so I find myself getting crafty on many of these projects by making some costumes myself if needed.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
No changes in the mix right now – just keeping on & giving my all to my clients!
