Meet Emily Daccarett

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Daccarett.

Emily, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I remember vividly the day we had to write down what or who we wanted to be when we grew up in Kindergarten, and I wrote down ‘singer/fashion designer’. Since that day, my goal never wavered. I moved to Paris, France to study fashion design. I felt I would find myself in the streets of Paris, as Julia Ormond in Sabrina (1995 film) had. I really did. I embraced the language, culture, and history from which I created my brand aesthetic. I moved to Los Angeles to start my own brand to which I could have the freedom to do what I want and not be stuck in one specific role. I love to explore and change according to what inspires me. I find a lot of my inspiration in film and with my first fashion show, I premiered a short film that told the story of my collection. It was with this project that I fell back into music and began by collaborations with film composer/producer S. Peace Nistades. I wrote the lyrics and sang the female vocals for my short film.

After working on a few songs together, I felt the need to learn how to produce myself. I wanted to implement what I do in fashion to my music. I enrolled at the Musicians Institute and began to search and develop my sound. Besides music theory, the hardest part has been finding that link to fuse my two loves, fashion and music. As I get closer to the release of my first EP, I feel the gap between the two together.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have been many times that I have thought of quitting when stress and anxiety take over, but at that moment I try to picture my life differently and there is nothing I’d rather do. I’m very grateful I have the opportunity to express myself artistically. When it came to fashion, I faced a lot of people telling me I didn’t have what it takes to be the industry, (never from my parents they have been my biggest supporters). People love to tell you who you are when in reality only you can know the extent of your drive and passion. I made my debut during LA Fashion Week to which my collection was well received. I then showed in New York and Paris, and have received awards for our fashion campaigns.

Despite everything, I felt I was missing a part of me and that was music. As happy as I was, I was starting to feel trapped. It was scary, it still is a bit scary but I needed this time to evolve and reconstruct my brand. This time around, it was me who kept telling myself I couldn’t do it and that I didn’t have the talent to pursue a musical career. Breaking through these insecurities has been a struggle, but I’ve stuck by it and I’ excited to share this side of me with everyone.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I was walking home from school and along the way, I kept getting harassed. When I got home, I was upset about the attention I had brought unto myself by dressing the way I did and felt it was my fault. Right after, I came to my senses and promised myself then and there that I would create a brand that encourages and empowers women to embrace their feminity and know that they have the right to want to feel and look sexy.

The Emily Daccarett womenswear brand is edgy, bold, and creates stories with each collection. My short fashion films have been part of the Official Selection in The Smalls Film Festival London, Fashion Film Festival Istanbul, and AAF. We have also won awards on our fashion campaigns shot by the talented photographer Ger Ger, most recently the Moscow Photography Award.

Later this year, I will be releasing my first single followed by an EP co-produced with S.Peace Nistasdes. It will also introduce a new collection. What sets me apart is I am at every stage of development and production with my clothing/accessories line and my music. The only way I can create is by being hands-on and making mistakes to better myself. My music is synth-pop, 80’s inspired/futuristic sound, elements of 70’s rock, with a cinematic vibe. Think of Blondie having a baby with film director David Lynch in 2020.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I think my curiosity is my most important quality. I’m constantly researching stories, history, documentaries and through all that I find inspiration and come up with interesting concepts. I’m a visual person and I what to create a 360 experience for people through images, music, and texture. I’m greatly influenced by films and that translates into the music I write.
