Meet Dr. Anadel Barbour

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Anadel Barbour.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Like many others, my nuclear family was filled with mental illness, alcoholism, rage and neglect. Armed with courage and an undeveloped brain, I set out to live on my own at age 17. My choices led me to very dark places. I was a hopeless drunk and drug addict for 22 years. When I sobered up, I had no intimate relationship, no job, and no education past 12th grade.

As the fog cleared and the body healed, I had to make a decision about my life. It has been a wonderful journey, reinventing myself on nothing more and nothing less than a Spiritual Path.

My struggles with relationships in sobriety were the most challenging. I found that to be true for all the people I was working with in sobriety. That is how I found my calling!

My studies led me to a career in Mental Health. Healthy Relationships and Enjoyable Sober Sex were the inspiration for my passion. Mindfulness techniques became the foundation for all my work. From EMDR Trauma Therapy to Addiction Counseling, re-training the mind is the key to healing. It enables people to choose the life they want to live.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Considering I did not get sober until I was 40 years old, I can easily say there were challenges along the way! Without an education, I had a lot of “interesting” jobs, clunky automobiles, dozens of intimate relationships, some of which landed me in a hospital with a broken nose, jail for being drunk in public and finally a detox!

I had many teachers along the way that gave me words of advice, the ability to heal myself, the strength to move forward. Things began to happen “the way they are supposed to happen”. Education has been a spiritual experience for me. Our minds need nourishment, as much as our bodies and hope I always continue to do so.

Dr. Anadel Barbour – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Sex, Trauma, Addiction.

I am a Sexologist and a Psychotherapist. I have PhD in the Philosophy of Human Sexuality and am a Licensed MFT, with certifications in EMDR Trauma Therapy, Addiction Studies, and Mindfulness based Psychology.

I have found that sex and drugs are sorely misunderstood in the Mental Health industry, so I have learned, practiced and used my own experiences to focus on concerns in those areas. Sex and drugs are also connected to trauma. EMDR has enhanced my practice because it focuses on specific adverse life events, or trauma, that are attached to or the result of sex and drugs.

What sets me apart is my ability to help clients feel comfortable talking about those taboo subjects. I focus on solutions rather than problems, and I teach people to empower themselves so that they don’t need to see me forever!

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
It cannot be put into one proudest moment. The journey has been and continues to be where my heart is.

One thing that stands out is from many: Horrendous sexual traumas can be relieved of their power! I have seen it in many of my clients. Using EMDR does not take away the memory of the event, it removes the continued suffering that has been caused the event. I urge anyone with sexual traumas to seek therapy and am offering my services to the #MeToo victims at a lower cost to help as many as I can.

Pricing:

  • $150.00 per full hour/Sliding scale fees are available, negotiated for clients with financial difficulties.
  • Insurance accepted as Out-Of-Network. Can provide invoices for you to submit to your insurance company.
  • All #MeToo seeking trauma therapy will pay 1/2 per session, with aminimum of 6 sessions (EMDR has Phases)
