Meet Debbe Goldstein

Today we’d like to introduce you to Debbe Goldstein.

Debbe, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have had an over thirty-year career in the arts from my first job at the Kitchen Center to Assistant Director of Admissions at Art Center to the head of artistic recruitment at Dreamworks Animation SKG. I moved to Scottsdale where I curated an exhibition at SMOCA entitled  “At Home with Ozzie and Harriet: Mid Century Design, and I served as president of the Advisory Board at the Arizona State University Art Museum.”

There were many artists I had met along the way and thought their work should be seen by more people. I decided to launch an online gallery to showcase their work. Because so many galleries are losing their brick and mortar, I thought it would be a good time to be online.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My business is relatively new. There are always challenges to launching something new. My skills are not necessarily technical, so putting together the website with an expert designer was totally out of my comfort zone.

But thrilling to learn and put it all together We had a pop-up exhibition in October that was very successful. I think having had varied experiences throughout the years made the launch a little easier. I think being in Arizona has both a downside and an upside.

I’m not distracted by the social aspect of being an LA gallerist, but I’m not in the middle of seeing exciting artists and exhibitions. That is why I make it a point to come to Los Angeles once a month to stay relevant and current.

We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I am strictly online. I currently represent five artists- four painters and a photographer.

One of the artists I represent is Titus Welliver, a brilliant actor currently starring in Bosch on Amazon. I’m most proud of the artists I represent and being able to share their work with an online audience.

I think my experience is what sets me apart from others, as well as having taught art history at the Art Center College of Design.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Our pop up exhibition in Los Angeles in October. One hundred and fifty people showed up. It was advertised strictly through the internet, social media and text. We sold work.

I was a participant in a conference in Bowling Green entitled, ” Popular Culture and the Bomb.” I presented a paper entitled “Lot’s Wife” which was about high art and design and how the atomic bomb influenced it.

My exhibition at SMOCA, “At Home with Ozzie and Harriet: Mid Century Design ” was a terrific hit. I gave a series of lectures at MOCA teaching the docents how to look at contemporary art.

But honestly, the thing I am most proud of is that there are dozens of artists that I have been able to help, first with their education and then with their careers.
