Today we’d like to introduce you to Carley Hovis.
Carley, please share your story with us.
I have been an animal trainer since 2005. I started my path to owning a successful dog training business at the University of San Diego, where I majored in Psychology with an emphasis in Animal Behavior. I started out training marine mammals, but discovered that my true passion was helping my fellow land mammals train their 4-legged friends, and in 2007, I made the switch from dolphins to dogs. In 2008, My husband Aaron and I started our own in-home training company; F.E.T.C.H. (Fun Enthusiastic Training for Canine Households) to help the dogs of Long Beach become the best they can be. I handled the face to face and the all the dog work, while Aaron managed the business behind the scenes. Then in 2011 I met Katherine. The two of us quickly realized that with our powers combined, we could provide a much need service to our current dog training clients as well as the whole canine community of Long Beach. One year later, in October of 2012, Aaron, Katherine, and I opened the doors to goFETCH: Your One-Stop Dog Shop!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have been plenty of challenges along our path, but the three of us are very dedicated to our clients (both two-legged and four-legged) and we’ve viewed each challenge as an opportunity to grow and learn. Everything from finding a building that would accommodate 40-50 dogs each day, to getting city permits, has given us a chance to learn something new. We have also met some incredible people who have helped us along the way. The building we are currently in is in the community of Bixby Knolls, in Long Beach, and the whole Business Association here in Bixby has been very welcoming and helpful!
goFETCH – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Our passion! goFETCH was created out of a desire to help fellow dog owners provide for their dogs. Each of us have had our own behaviorally special dogs, and we realized that the one-size dog care out there wasn’t enough, so we created something better. And we love what we do! Each dog that comes to us becomes part of our goFETCH family, and we want to make sure that they are cared for as if they were our own.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I’m not sure I can pin it down to one moment! We have accomplished so much in the past 5 years and have so many plans for the future that there isn’t just one moment that sticks out. I am probably most proud that the three of us are making our dreams come true while also raising families! Aaron and I have two little boys, our oldest was only 6 months old in a backpack carrier at our grand opening, and Katherine little boy is the youngest. I think we are a modern version of the American Dream.
