Meet Briyana Negrette of B Negrette Art

Today we’d like to introduce you to Briyana Negrette.

Briyana, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Over the last four years, I have been involved in community and entertainment arts. In 2014 I had my first artist residency for Goodwill Industries of Orange County, where I created a series of paintings for auction that supported their mission to provide careers to people with disabilities. Since 2015 I have been working on collaborative mural projects with The Santa Ana Artist(a) Coalition where we create murals that involve community engagement for city beautification. Later on, August 21, 2018 we were given certificates of recognition by the Santa Ana City Council for our positive influence in the Community.

In 2017, I was an Art Teacher for the Orange County Children’s Therapeutic Art Center, working in the Engage 360 program for the Santa Ana School District, where I taught at-risk students art concepts that helps with self-confidence and academic success. I currently work as an Art Handler and have worked on exhibits for institutions such as LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes, the Walt Disney Company, the Laguna Art Museum, the Orange County Museum of Art, and the Pasadena Museum of California Art.

Has it been a smooth road?
Creating is the easiest part of being an artist, the challenge is competing.  I’ve had good luck meeting the right people, who lead me to working on projects for other artists or myself. My current focus is working on proposals and collaborative projects with artists in southern California, to create art that positively impacts communities.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
My grandfather is my inspiration for creating. Unfortunately, I never knew him, he had passed away when my father was fifteen from Leukemia. I came to know him through his art, he painted still life and portraits of family members. Growing up I would always see his work in other relatives’ homes. He has a distinct style for his drawing and his paintings, some of the styles and images have continued into my own work. I love painting and drawing but I have been challenging myself to build and sculpt.

As an artist, the work I create is inspired by classical and contemporary themes of esoteric tradition, spiritualism, and the subconscious. My work consists of conceptual layers, re-purposed items, and bold color, creating a balance between chaos and clarity that translates seamlessly across my work. Taking a closer look at, and transforming, everyday objects, while challenging the ideas of what constitutes art and how it should be made.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I currently work for LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes in downtown and being in LA you get a diverse group of people and ages. I know LA is a great place to show and network with artists and creators. You just need to  get involved in the community and find out what is going on and how you can make a  positive impact.
