Meet Britni Chisolm of View Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Britni Chisolm.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Hi, my name is Britni—also known as Cozmedu—and I’m an underground independent artist based in Los Angeles. I was born in Phoenix and partly raised in Compton, and when I was younger I moved to LA for a better, more stable life with a wealthy uncle in my family who was known for helping troubled kids finish school and go to college. I grew up with a mix of adoptive and biological cousins in a beautiful five-bedroom home with a backhouse. I went to high school in Compton and graduated from Los Angeles Adventist Academy, where music was a major part of the environment, and I met so many talented singers, writers, musicians, and directors early on—including people like Sir John Lee, and Margis Lee Miles. After that, I attended Oakwood University, an HBCU and a big hub for young Black talent in the Adventist community, and it was deeply musical—home to one of the world’s best choirs—which pushed me further into music, creative writing, poetry, and producing. Through those years, I connected with artists like Steve Lacy, Anderson Paak, Mick Jenkins, and Kelsey Gonzalez, and eventually I became one of the vocalists on Anderson .Paak’s first album, Venice. I went on to release my own music too—one of my early singles was “Martyr” in 2016—and my most recent release before taking a step back was “Veiled Lamps” in 2019, eight months after pregnancy. Even when I paused to focus on motherhood, I didn’t stop writing and creating—I just kept turning my experiences into art, and I’m still building from there today.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No, it hasn’t been a smooth road. Struggles come with anything that’s meant to be great, and for me a lot of it had to do with not having the money, knowledge, or resources—so I really did have to get it out the mud. I wasn’t raised in a “full-blown rich family.” If anything, I’d say we were part of that “black sheep” umbrella—raised by my father at the time, and we didn’t have much. We didn’t ask for much, but we definitely needed more, and I understood that clearly around the age of 12 or 13. When I was offered the chance to leave Phoenix for a better life, I took it right away. I moved the following weekend—or possibly even the same weekend—and my grandma and granddad pulled me out of school with my dad’s permission and drove me to California, where I started a new life and a new lifestyle.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Music is definitely one of my biggest loves, and I wear a lot of different hats in this space—I write, create, and bring projects to life the way I think they should be. I’m the type of person who’s always going after it, and if I don’t know how to do something, I learn it. I stay low-key and focused, keep my head down, and finish the work until it’s a real masterpiece. What I’m known for is my authenticity: I pull from a very pure, true place, and I don’t feel the need to over-cater to the listener if it means losing my main message. I’m a lyricist and a poet at heart, so words matter deeply to me. I care about being heard, and I care about telling the truth—even when it hurts—because that’s what connects the most. What I’m most proud of is that I’ve stayed true to my voice while still growing as an artist.

What’s next?
Sure—when it comes to music, I’m definitely coming out of my hiatus very soon with a new single called “Givin’”—I wrote and sang it, and it’s mixed by my friend Alex, one of the best producers I know. I’m really excited to put that out.

Outside of music, I’m super into black wellness and beauty, so I’ve been working and revamping my wellness brand with plans to open e-shop within the next month or two.
