Today we’d like to introduce you to Baldomero Fernandez.
Baldomero, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I began my career in Middle School in Miami, FL where a scheduling mistake put me in Photo Class. I fell in love with Photography immediately and I continued throughout High School and into College where I studied and graduated from the Rochester Institute of Technology (R.I.T.) After RIT, I moved to New York City where I assisted and apprenticed under some of the most renowned photographers working today. Eventually, I went off on my own shooting for magazines like W, Life, Time, Vanity Fair, New York Times, Italian Vogue, L’Officiel, Departures, I’ve had the opportunity to shoot for many amazing clients and I’ve been blessed enough to travel throughout the world making images. Photography has given me everything. I met my wife on a photoshoot almost 20 years ago in Los Angeles. I convinced her to get married and move to NYC with me. She has worked for many years in many different areas of Production she has worked in Production companies, Creative Agencies and In-House at various brands. Which has led to many collaborations working together.
Working with my wife has been one of my favorite things I’ve ever gotten to do. We even had the opportunity to work together in the set of America’s Next Top Model where I was a photographer on the show for two episodes. Four years ago, my wife changed directions in her own career we decided to relocate to Los Angeles. That meant not only lifting the roots we had set in NYC for over 15 years but bringing out a huge trailer we had parked out on a farm in the Catskills in Upstate, NY. It was a really exciting time, albeit scary. We took this wonderful leap of faith and were open to all the new possibilities living on the West Coast afforded us. We transformed our lives and also our 60 years old trailer in the process. That old trailer was gut renovated and converted into a beautiful Mid Century gem that now serves as a Celebrity Location Trailer. We use it for our own photoshoots as well as occasionally packing up the family and vacationing to some beautiful locations in California and the Southwest.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road to where I am today was not always smooth there have definitely been struggles. The main thing I have struggled with is patience. Early on, I wanted my career to just materialize, I thought it would be instant success and acclaim. I did not realize that a career is built over many years and respect is something that is earned over time. However over time, I have accumulated a body of work that I am really proud of and I have worked with so many amazing people that have become good friends that I feel incredibly lucky. When I look back at some of the things I’ve gotten to see and do, the people I’ve met and the friendships I’ve made I can’t help but feel incredibly grateful.
Please tell us about Kenyon Co.
We are a photography and production company. However, our business is really a service. Our aim is to make it effortless for our clients to achieve what they need, Technically I am a Photographer and my wife is a Producer but what we do is so much more. When a client hires us what they get is an entire team with decades of combined experience. They get the resources of all of our talented collaborators and creatives. We thrive when we are tasked with assignments and the challenges of logistics, time and budget. We handle everything from creation of the initial concepts to putting together a team of collaborators such as Fashion Stylists, Hair & Makeup, Set Designers, Art Directors and more. Because of social media and the internet photography has organically evolved into film making. Now we not only make still images but we are putting together multimedia videos for displays in-store and on electronic billboards and mobile devices for social media platforms. It has evolved our workflow and approach to a shoot. There are so many things to be proud of for us, however the most fulfilling thing is the many clients that keep coming back to us again and again. It makes us feel validated that our work is good and brings value to our clients.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I don’t know that I have a specific favorite childhood memory, its probably more of a conglomeration of memories. Cross country road trips with my family, Boy Scout campouts and going to Miami Dolphin and Hurricane football games in the Orange Bowl probably all rank up there as favorites.
