Today we’d like to introduce you to Azadeh Nikzadeh.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My path as a storyteller began in Shiraz, Iran, where I started making films to explore human rights, women’s empowerment, and the unseen dimensions of heritage and faith. Studying under the master Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami at the Asian Film Academy in Busan, South Korea, shaped my direction early on, and being the first female director from Shiraz to bring a short film to the Cannes Short Film Corner opened my eyes to the universal power of cinema.
However, creating art under strict state oversight meant facing censorship and restrictions as a filmmaker in Iran. Leaving Iran was a pivotal turning point- it was the moment I committed to telling uncensored stories that bring rarely-seen history and suppressed truths to light. Over the past 14 years living in the U.S. and building my career, my work has evolved to blur the lines between fiction, documentary, and social impact. Today, through Burnt Generation Studios, I am developing my upcoming feature film, THE DEVIANTS, a mythic thriller rooted in buried history and ancient Zoroastrian lore, while financing its proof of concept through strategic brand partnerships and documenting the creative journey in public on YouTube.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has been anything but a smooth road. Moving from facing government censorship in Iran to navigating the commercial film industry in the U.S. presented a whole new set of hurdles. As an Iranian-American female auteur, I’ve often had to fight against pre-conceived boxes and gatekeepers who label culturally rooted, high-concept stories as “niche.”
Having experienced the pressure of censorship firsthand, total creative autonomy is something I refuse to compromise on. Traditional financing models can be restrictive and slow, so I took ownership of the pipeline, pioneering direct brand partnerships to finance our proof-of-concept shoot, building community-driven impact campaigns, and opening up the process directly to global audiences online.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a writer, director, producer, and social impact producer. I specialize in dramatic narratives anchored in true historical events, women’s resilience, and unexplored spiritual lineages.
Feature Films & Screenplays: I am currently developing THE DEVIANTS, which recently advanced as a Second Rounder for the prestigious Sloan/Sundance Fellowship. My previous feature script, Dandelion, was developed at the Athena Film Festival Writers Lab and recognized as a Second Rounder by both Sundance and the Austin Film Festival.
Impact & Documentary Production: Through Burnt Generation Studios and Fraternité Impact Producers, I’ve executive produced, co-produced, and led impact campaigns for documentaries like Safe Sets (Prime Video/Apple TV), Credible Fear, and Left Bank: The Women Who Rescued James Joyce’s Ulysses. My work has reached platforms like the United Nations CSW and the International Religious Freedom Summit in DC.
Building in Public: What sets my process apart right now is transparency. We are producing a high-end proof of concept for THE DEVIANTS financed through brand alignment rather than traditional gatekeepers, and launch-documenting every step of the filmmaking pipeline on YouTube.
I am most proud of building a body of work that doesn’t ask for permission to exist, it creates its own table.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Uncensored truth, cultural preservation, and creative independence. Having started my journey in a system where stories are heavily vetted and suppressed, I know firsthand that cinema is a vital instrument for human rights, memory, and freedom. What matters most to me is ensuring that stories rooted in ancient, misunderstood, or erased traditions are brought to life with dignity, scale, and uncompromising artistic freedom.
