Meet Alberto Belli

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alberto Belli.

Alberto, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was born in Guadalajara, Mexico from Italian parents. Seeing Jurassic Park on the big screen as a kid, made me want to become part of whatever that was that made that unforgettable experience. Later on, I learned in a book that one of the jobs was called directing and I wanted to become a director ever since. After studying computer science in college, I finally moved to LA to get my MFA at USC School of Cinematic Arts. There I had the chance to direct short films — a couple of them won a student Emmys for best comedy shorts. Shortly after graduating I got lucky and did various videos that went viral that captured the attention of the international media, Hollywood and the commercial industry. I started directing commercials, that lead me to direct a couple of episodes for the Netflix hit series La Casa de las Flores, be the judge representing Mexico in the reality competition series “The World’s Best” hosted by James Cordon, and currently my first feature at WarnerMedia.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Like anything in life worth having is worth fighting for! So the road has definitely been full of ups and downs. Starting with the struggles of “simply” getting a greencard to be able to work in the States, to having a career that mostly revolves around who you know and let me tell you — I didn’t know a single person when I moved to LA. But I’ve learned that the key to survive this industry is to never give up and always believe in yourself.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I am director that focuses on comedy and action/adventure. I love telling stories that make people laugh and give them a break from the hardships of life. I direct commercials, TV series, and most recently feature films. My goal as a filmmaker is to change the current narrative about Latinos through comedy, stirring away from stereotypes and misconceptions. My dream would be to direct a big action/adventure movie like Star Wars or Indiana Jones.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would have told myself to focus more on writing. When I was in film school no one told me how much directors actually have to write! To be able to get a commercial, you need to write a lengthy treatment to convince the brand you’re the right one. To get a show made or get your dream movie, you have to write scripts that people want to make because now, more than ever, the competition is brutal and it’s much more easier to sell a movie and attach yourself to direct than someone else offering the job.
