Meet Ala’na Miller of SG Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ala’na Miller.

Hi Ala’na, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’m Ala’na Miller, owner and photographer behind SG Photography, born and raised right here in Spartanburg County, South Carolina.

My love for photography started early. While attending Dorman High School, I was involved in photography and eventually began working at Sears Portrait Studio. I later worked at Walmart Portrait Studio, where I continued learning the foundations of posing, lighting, customer service, and most importantly, how to connect with people in front of the camera.

Over the years, photography remained a part of my life, but eventually I decided to take everything I had learned and truly bet on myself. In October 2025, I became fully self-employed with SG Photography.

That leap has probably taught me more than anything else. Business has been good enough to sustain me, but I’ve also experienced slow seasons that I wasn’t fully prepared for. Those seasons have taught me discipline, better planning, patience, and what it really means to run a business and not just be good at photography.

Today, I photograph everything from families and birthdays to graduates, professional headshots, branding, events, and weddings. I love capturing the big milestones, but I also believe you don’t always need a special occasion to get in front of the camera. Sometimes you simply need to celebrate where you are right now.

I’m proud that something I started doing so many years ago has grown into a business that supports my family and allows me to serve the same community that helped shape me.

And I still feel like I’m just getting started.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but I think that’s what has made the journey so meaningful.

One of my biggest challenges has been learning the business side of being a creative. When I became fully self-employed in October 2025, I knew how to be a photographer, but I quickly learned that being a photographer and running a successful photography business are two completely different things.

I wasn’t fully prepared for the slow months. When photography became my primary source of income, those slower seasons hit differently. They forced me to become more disciplined with my finances, more intentional with marketing, and better prepared for the natural ups and downs of entrepreneurship.

I’ve also had to balance being a mother, business owner, photographer, and student while still navigating life outside of those titles. There have definitely been moments when I questioned whether I was doing the right thing or whether I should go back to the security of a traditional job.

But every difficult season has taught me something.

I’m learning that success isn’t always about constantly growing or having a full calendar. Sometimes success is making it through a slow season, adjusting your strategy, learning from your mistakes, and continuing to show up.

I’m still figuring some things out as I go, but I’m proud that I haven’t given up. The road hasn’t been smooth, but it has made me more disciplined, resilient, and determined to build something that lasts.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Through SG Photography, I specialize in capturing people and the moments that matter most to them. I photograph families, graduates, birthdays, professional headshots and branding, weddings, events, and milestone celebrations.

I would say I’m most known for creating a comfortable experience, especially for people who tell me, “I don’t know how to pose” or “I’m not photogenic.” I guide my clients throughout their session so they don’t have to figure it out on their own. I want them to leave feeling confident and excited about what we created together.

I’m also known for my fast turnaround time. I know how exciting it is to see your photos, so I take pride in delivering quality work without making my clients wait weeks to receive it.

What sets me apart is the experience and foundation behind my work. I started in traditional portrait studios like Sears and Walmart, so I learned photography through hands-on experience—lighting, posing, working quickly, customer service, and connecting with all kinds of people. More than 20 years later, those lessons are still a huge part of how I photograph my clients today.

What I’m most proud of, though, is the trust people place in me. I’ve had clients allow me to document some of the most important chapters of their lives, and then come back when the next milestone happens. That’s bigger than simply taking a pretty picture.

My goal with SG Photography is to create photographs that people will actually value years from now. Trends will come and go, but photographs of the people you love become part of your family’s history. I want my work to feel beautiful today and still mean something generations from now.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I would say resilience and consistency have been the most important qualities behind my success.

I’m not someone who has had everything perfectly figured out. I’ve had to learn, adjust, start over, and keep showing up even during seasons when things weren’t going the way I planned.

I also believe consistency builds trust. Whether it’s the quality of my work, how I treat my clients, or simply continuing to show up for my business during slower seasons, I’ve learned that you can’t only be committed when things are going well.

Photography may be my gift, but resilience is what has kept me going long enough to grow that gift into a business.
