Today we’d like to introduce you to Adam Williss.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started Wing Chun at the age of 18. The Dragon Institute grew out of a small group I taught in my San Clemente garage. I wanted to be the very best at what at what I did so I made practicality and efficiency everything. And I mean everything! And because of that single-minded dedication, our school has grown to have a student body of over 150. I made sure that we weren’t distracted by flashy things. I made sure we specialized in high quality Wing Chun Kung Fu. Plain and simple. An art that doesn’t deliver the cheers of a crowd. In Wing Chun, reward comes in the form of cutting through complexity and in moments of honest application. This is an art that teaches how a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger, heavier assailant by using direct attacks, efficient movement, postural leverage and a meticulous dedication to practicality.
Has it been a smooth road?
Teaching an art that isn’t flashy is often difficult for new students to understand. Because of its dedication to efficiency, often new people can’t see how Wing Chun works. It’s subtle, hidden power takes an open mind.
Another obstacle is finding the right people to grow our business. Since our specific type of Wing Chun is so unique, we can’t just hire instructors. Instead, we must grow instructors in order to keep the quality and integrity of our methods. Training high quality instructors takes a long time. First, they must be long term students for many years who have developed unquestionably high skill. Then they must have the compassion, patience and desire to teach others. Most people simply don’t have these things.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
The Dragon Institute is the leading authority for Wing Chun in Orange County. Our private martial arts school consists of around 150 students of all ages – adults, seniors, teens and kids. Our Wing Chun schools in Irvine & Dana Point offer unique classes and private lessons. We specialize in traditional Chinese Martial Arts with progressive, comprehensive high-quality instruction. Dedicated to the traditional methods of Wing Chun training, we make sure everything we do is relevant to all aspects of your life.
We’re different in our approach to martial arts. For us, Kung Fu is our vessel for self-growth. It’s about living more authentically and reaching higher levels of potential in all areas of life. We use martial arts as the gateway to an integrated approach to healthy living for the mind, body and soul.
Although traditional in our principles, our modern training methods at The Dragon Institute are some of the most progressive in Wing Chun today. Practicality, innovation and efficiency guide our continuous Wing Chun evolution. Nothing is practiced simply because of tradition. Everything we do is deliberately practiced for functional application.
Built upon an authentic passion for high quality Wing Chun, our school has the kind of honest dedication to quality all too uncommon in today’s world.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
The greater Los Angeles area is one the best places for a martial arts school. Highly populated and health conscious, I’d say it is the perfect place for our kind of business.
