Life & Work with VJ Boyd of Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to VJ Boyd.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I moved to LA in 2008 from Dallas. I’d previously worked for several years in sales at IBM, but realized a couple years in that it wasn’t for me. I worked as an assistant in the writers’ offices of a few shows, including THE BEAST (Patrick Swayze’s final project), FALLING SKIES, and JUSTIFIED, until I got staffed on season 2 of JUSTIFIED. I learned a lot on that show, and went on to work on a couple of other broadcast shows and sold and produced a couple of pilots as well, along with Mark Bianculli. Then finally, on the third attempt, one of our pilots got picked up to series: LINCOLN RHYME: HUNT FOR THE BONE COLLECTOR. Since then, I’ve sold a few other projects and I co-showran THE MADNESS on Netflix.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I don’t know that this industry offers a smooth road to anyone, but mine has been smoother than most. I’ve been blessed to work for great bosses like Graham Yost and Shawn Ryan and Dave Andron, all of whom I learned a lot from. The lead actors I’ve worked with have also all been great–nearly everyone I’ve worked with has been focused on making the best show possible. My biggest struggles have come in the last five years, as Covid and the strike reduced TV production and made work harder to get. I feel like things are getting back to normal now, though (or a new normal at least).

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a TV writer/producer. I’m proud of being a being a good boss and always giving my all.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Save you money, haha. But seriously, we all know the industry is fickle and work is going to be inconsistent from time to time, but even knowing and preaching that, I *still* should have saved more money!
