Today we’d like to introduce you to Selwyn Huqueriza.
Hi Selwyn, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I grew up in the Bay Area. Pursued tennis competitively in hopes to be a professional since I was 5. Played through high school on Varsity and decided to give it up in college At that point I was already taking drama classes since middle school and high school.
So I started pursuing acting as a career after giving up tennis; signed with agencies, did short films, commercials. Then 10 years ago I moved to LA to be in the environment of TV and FIlm. Started working on Nickelodeon and Disney shows as background. About 3-4 years into LA and doing a couple commercial spots, short films, I started creating my own content and then I got introduced into stunts.
The past 6 years I have been doing stunt jobs on films like “Plane” with Gerard Butler, to acting reoccurring roles on ABC’s Stumptown and Nickelodeon’s Knight Squad where I had a role playing myself, ‘Selwyn’, AND did stunts on it as well.
Fun Fact, on Knight Squad I was first brought on as background for the pilot episode. Then a couple episodes in, the Stunt Coordinator for the show saw me training stunts at a facility, and then upgraded me from background to Stunt Performer, where I did Fight Choreography and various stunt gags like breaking through a table. After a season working on the show, the writers then gave me a full character with lines, where I played myself “Selwyn”.
Today I still pursue Acting and filmmaking, but also create content ranging from; comedy, action, action-comedy, fashion, vlogs. I have actively built my online presence with currently over 66,000 followers across FB, IG, and Tiktok!
I aim to blend everything I have learned and am interested in together; filmmaking, content creation, stunts, acting. Would love to direct and produce more so down the line!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I wouldn’t say it has been a smooth road whatsoever.
Definitely has its ups and downs. Some struggles would be financially, as you need to keep an open schedule for auditions, at the same time paying rent and bills. Always on the hunt for the next job.
The mental struggle of the constant feelings of; am I good enough, am I doing enough, what more can I do, should I keep pursuing this career path, should I settle with a plan B, do I give up on this. Or better yet, am I equipped for when the opportunity comes.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am an actor, stuntman, content creator, filmmaker.
As a stunt performer, I specialize in the fight choreography aspect. I fell in love with martial arts as I got into stunts, so naturally I gravitated towards the fighting and choreo side of stunts.
I would say that I am known best for the action-comedy content I create; mixing acting, action, and comedy. Inspirations are Bruce Lee for the moments, and Jackie chan for the physical comedy aspect.
I am most proud of my growth as a filmmaker and content creator, and to be able to have made a living doing so up until now.
What sets me apart from the others; is that more than anything, I want whatever I choose to create, to be memorable. It doesn’t have to be the best, but I want people to remember what I was a part of.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson I have learned along my journey, and have to keep remembering, is to stay true to myself and trust in the things that I gravitate and enjoy doing the most in life. Don’t stand in my own way.
