Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Tavera.

Hi Michael, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was originally signed to a publishing company as a songwriter. After my first year, I realized that I did not want to be a recording artist and that songwriting was too emotionally draining and personal. I decided to find a way to write music for a living that did not involve lyrics. I had a friend who was working for Hanna-Barbera that gave me an opportunity to start writing underscore for animation. I felt completely comfortable and engaged with this type of music composition and exploration. For the past thirty eight years, I have been learning and exploring all kinds of music composition for all kinds of underscore for both live-action and animation. This career remains a completely fulfilling and meaningful way to not only make a living, but learn and grow spiritually through the expression of music.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has never been smooth or easy. Everyday of my life, I am faced with challenges. The competition for work always increases. The technology will ultimately replace composers. It has been endlessly challenging, but the rewards can be endlessly rewarding. No risk-no reward. I commend anyone and everyone who is willing to endure the challenges that come with the decision to make a living in the commercial arts.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Every film and television composer is in the service business. Every employer requires a person who as open and aware, willing and able to serve the vision of the project. A composer needs to demonstrate the ability to “get it right the first time”.
There are no second chances in post-production. We have to operate within budget and time constraints while we maintain an open and transparent process for the client. The clients needs must be met an hopefully exceeded within the limits of the production parameters. I have always taken pride in the fact that I deliver superior quality on time every time. My objective is to always over-deliver, build long-term, high-trust relationships. I love contributing my best energy to my clients.

How do you think about luck?
I have been lucky to meet certain people who have continued to believe in me and be champions of my career.
I have been lucky to have grown up in Southern California around an exceptional group of people that I am proud to work with. The harder you work, the luckier you are.
