Life & Work with James Thomas of Mid-City

Today we’d like to introduce you to James Thomas.

Hi James, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My name is James Thomas aka Master JT. I own The Pig Pen LA, a BDSM event space and Photo Studio. Our venue is a creative, themed studio and event space designed to spark imagination, self-expression, and community connection. Styled with dramatic lighting, elegant décor, and versatile sets, the space can be transformed for everything from photo and film shoots to workshops, private gatherings, or immersive events.

Often referred to as a “dungeon” in theme, the space highlights fantasy-inspired design elements that are meant to create atmosphere and storytelling opportunities. Guests may use the space for artistic projects, theatrical performances, or safe, consensual role-play experiences.

Above all, our space emphasizes respect, consent, and inclusivity. Whether someone is here for a creative shoot, a themed event, or a guided workshop, the environment is carefully maintained to ensure safety, comfort, and a welcoming atmosphere for all identities and experience levels.

I opened The Pig Pen LA In early 2021 after the COVID-19 pandemic left kinksters across Los Angeles with few safe spaces to meet and express themselves creatively, especially within the LGBTQ+ community. The first location was quite successful East LA. We where there for 3 years when a fire destroyed everything. I wasnt going to be upset about it and just reminded myself “When life closes a door, it opens a window”… and it did. Three months later we reopened a bigger and better location on Santa Monica Blvd in WeHo and right in Vaseline Alley. After a year there we decided to expand bigger and found our current space in Mid City on Washington Blvd. Check us out at www.PigPenLA.com

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road. Fire shut down our first location. Our second location seemed perfectly located in West Hollywoods Vaseline Alley but our lease was temporary. 5 years after first opening, despite many set backs, the overwhelming support from supporters and community activists has allowed us to survive huge obstacles. Today we are located in Mid City in a space bigger and better than we ever thought it could be. We are not done growing tho. There are plans for expansion and other locations later down the road. I know there are challenges ahead. Im not worried tho…..You can thow me to the wolves but I will come back leading the pack!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in providing safe spaces for creatives for all communities. There are many “Dungeon” themed spaces throughout LA but most of them are run by female Dominatrixs and cater primarily to the straight community. Pig Pen LA is an LGBTQ+ owned business but welcomes and encourages everyone to experience our studio.

Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
