Good morning Stephanie, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: When was the last time you felt true joy?
Today, my children.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am a proud mama of two, actor, accessibility consultant, deaf mentor, and founder of Pepita Productions. My focus is on increasing accessibility within the entertainment, arts, and film industries, as well as educating and raising awareness about the inclusion of diverse disabled artists. I am particularly passionate about seeing an increase in the number of Latino/a/x/e deaf and hard-of-hearing artists in these fields.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
I vividly remember feeling powerful around the age of eight, when I began my ballet journey. That feeling intensified when I performed on stage, in front of the audience, along with the other young dancers. Looking back at a photo from that time, I can see the pride radiating from me – I felt the most powerful among all those little girls. I loved dancing and still do. It makes me feel alive.
When did you stop hiding your pain and start using it as power?
The emotional pain from past traumas led me to a realization: I had endured enough. I transformed that pain into strength, which gave me the courage to leave a long-term, toxic relationship. The power I found within myself is courage.I am thankful because I have a wonderful life now. My supportive husband and children.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What’s a cultural value you protect at all costs?
Two values I hold dearly are my Deaf culture and Puerto Rican culture.
Deaf culture: I believe it’s crucial to maintain a positive attitude between the Deaf and hearing worlds. Sign language is sacred, with such a rich history, and it’s truly magical.
Puerto Rican culture: Though a small island, it’s mighty. I hope the freedom and independence will return someday. We must keep it alive by discussing family, heritage, food, and the arts for generations to come.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What will you regret not doing?
I know I will regret not traveling enough. There is so much to see in this world in such a little time, and I want to make the most of my time to explore it.
