Shanequa Reed shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Hi Shanequa, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: Have you stood up for someone when it cost you something?
Actually, just recently I had to stand up for the group and sacrifice my life. We were trying to escape before a notorious serial killer made their way to our room. I ended up jumping into a casket—only to realize that everyone’s fate depended on me making it out the other side. Talk about a heart-pounding [escape room] birthday party with a bunch of girlfriends who are scared of everything (almost everything, just in case they are reading this)… absolutely hilarious.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
There’s good and evil in the world, but I’ve made a conscious choice to always see the good. Circumstances shouldn’t define how we view others or let one person’s poor choices shape our outlook on humanity.
Being held at gunpoint revealed the flaws that exist within people — but it also reminded me that those flaws don’t represent everyone. In this industry, I’ve learned to be just as courageous as I was in that moment: to choose myself, to know that I am enough, and to give everything I have, because tomorrow is never promised.
I’m thankful for the challenges and the hiccups along the way — they’ve shaped me into the person I am today.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
I had to let this question sit for a moment—maybe I gave up before I ever really started. Everyone heard my words, but no one saw the action. Once I gave myself the green light, everything changed—later in my 20s.
My first stage experience was a 7th/8th grade play, Rikki-Tikki-Tavi, where I played one of the snakes. We even staged a scene to break a dish as we tussled to the floor. Looking back, acting and a little stunt work had always been in my future—I just didn’t know it yet.
Once I gave myself permission to chase it, alongside my I.T. degree, I discovered what truly made me happiest. I pursued both, compared them, and opportunities started pouring in: commercials, infomercials, commercial print, feature work.
Then came the big leap: LA. I told my family, “Don’t be surprised—I’m moving soon.” Six months later, I was there. Believe it or not, I also told my mom don’t be surprised if you see me on one of your favorite soap operas. My first major speaking role? General Hospital as a Gate Agent, while I was working a gig as a Flight Attendant for Delta and American Airlines. Talk about God’s plan.
Lesson learned: trust yourself, chase what lights you up, and never give up.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
No, absolutely not. I’m an introvert — and I’m sure many actors can relate. Acting gives me the freedom to explore and express all the different sides of myself. But when I’m home, I completely shut down. My family and friends know to give me a few solid days just to recharge.
I’m the type of person who gives my all to everything and everyone — I’m a perfectionist by nature. That level of commitment can be intense at times, which is why I’ve learned that balance is essential. Self-care isn’t a luxury; it’s necessary maintenance.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. Are you tap dancing to work? Have you been that level of excited at any point in your career? If so, please tell us about those days.
Still counting down the days until I can finally celebrate the news! What I can share for now is that I had the incredible opportunity to work on a project out of state — not just as a local hire. For me, that’s a huge milestone. My family knows this journey has been a long one. Along the way, I’ve lost several loved ones, including my dad, and this moment felt like confirmation that I’m exactly where I’m meant to be.
I truly believe my family continues to guide, protect, and help open those tough doors from above. I’m deeply grateful to see this moment come to fruition at this point in my career, knowing it’s only the beginning. I’m staying prayed up with my prayer warriors by my side.
And to make it even more special — during that same year, I was blessed with the opportunity to work with veterans like Loretta Devine, Keith David along with Paula Patton and so many more. Which was the second thing I spoke: Lifetime! Now, let’s open the flood gates, in abundance; speaking more positive things into existence.
