We’re looking forward to introducing you to Shahla Rahimi Reynolds. Check out our conversation below.
Shahla, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
My day begins with a cup of coffee and a small pastry. I use this time to review my schedule and plan the tasks I need to complete throughout the day.
Although I have established this morning routine many times, I find that each new day feels like a fresh start, offering an opportunity for new possibilities and renewed focus.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Sonarta was founded with the mission of “Connecting Art to Art Enthusiasts” by showcasing innovative artistic concepts within our local community. In less than a year, Sonarta received commendation from the Oklahoma Department of Tourism for our innovative use of technology in the arts. I had the opportunity to develop three major public art installations and to collaborate with both state and federal agencies. Additionally, during the formative stages of Sonarta, I served as an arts commissioner for Oklahoma City, contributing to the development of public art policy guidelines. In 2015, I relocated to Los Angeles, where I pursued new creative initiatives to strengthen community engagement through the arts. I take pride in my artistic contributions, as each piece represents a meaningful moment in history and reflects the stories of the many individuals involved.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who taught you the most about work?
As a child, I recall observing my father creating small toys for our family and performing repairs around the house. I admired his strong work ethic, dedication, and commitment to doing his tasks thoroughly. His persistence, drive, and determination in his work have always inspired me and influenced my own approach to my professional responsibilities.
When did you stop hiding your pain and start using it as power?
In 2010, I was diagnosed with cancer. During that challenging period, maintaining a positive outlook became increasingly difficult. Throughout this experience, I came to realize that the most valuable aspect of life is the relationships we have with loved ones and those we care about. I made a conscious effort to adopt a more positive attitude and to focus on how I could support and serve others, helping to bring some light into those difficult times.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
I have consistently demonstrated authenticity in both professional and personal settings. I prioritize honesty and transparency in my communication, which has earned the trust of colleagues and friends alike. My guiding principles include integrity, kindness, and a commitment to supporting and assisting others whenever possible.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I have consistently aimed to demonstrate compassion, care, and kindness through my artwork and community service efforts. Many of my pieces are created in memory of those who have passed away and to honor individuals who have served their communities. It is my hope that, after I am gone, each of my works will serve as a lasting testament to my values and the way I have sought to live my life.
