We’re looking forward to introducing you to Seema Cecil. Check out our conversation below.
Seema , we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
Recently, I traveled to India to be with my mother after her triple bypass surgery. Being able to care for her during her recovery was a profound blessing. I feel a deep sense of pride in having been the daughter by her side when she needed it most; it was a powerful reminder of the strength of our bond.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My Journey: From One Chair to a Full-Service Studio
I am the founder of Seema’s Skin Care. My story began in 2002 when I migrated from India to California. With a vision and a strong work ethic, my husband and I opened a small salon inside a local Indian movie rental store in the San Fernando Valley, starting with just a single chair for eyebrow threading.
While building the business, I returned to school to become a licensed Esthetician in 2003 and later earned my Cosmetology license in 2004. These credentials allowed me to steadily expand our offerings from a one-chair operation to a two-room clinic, and eventually into the comprehensive beauty studio we are today.
What Makes Us Unique
What sets Seema’s Skin Care apart is our commitment to being a “one-stop” destination for beauty. We take pride in several unique aspects of our brand:
Comprehensive Care: We offer everything from facials and speed waxing to hair and nail services all under one roof.
Bridal Ecosystem: We are the only salon in the area providing a complete bridal package including hair, skin, nails, makeup, and intricate traditional Henna.
Global Community: Located in diverse Los Angeles, we are honored to serve a wide variety of clients from every part of the world.
The Next Chapter: Bespoke Fashion
We are currently evolving beyond beauty into the world of bespoke clothing. I am thrilled to soon offer custom-tailored clothes to our valued customers, completing the vision of a holistic lifestyle brand.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
My relationship with my father has influenced me greatly; he remains my primary role model even after his passing in 2005. He was a man who found true joy in giving and ensuring those around him were happy. As a father of three girls, he worked tirelessly to provide for our family while extending that same care to anyone in need.
He was incredibly generous—it was a rule in our home that no visitor ever left without being fed. Witnessing his selfless nature and how he served as a “rock” for our family taught me the importance of being compassionate, a good listener, and a fighter. I have always strived to embody his strength and his heart in everything I do.
How My Father’s Legacy Shapes My Business
The values my father instilled in me are the very foundation of how I run my studio today:
The Spirit of Service: Just as my father believed no visitor should leave our home hungry, I believe no client should leave my studio feeling anything less than pampered and cared for. I treat every person who walks through my doors like a guest in my home.
Compassionate Listening: My father taught me the importance of being a good listener. In the beauty industry, this is essential—I don’t just provide a service; I listen to my clients’ needs and stories, building the same deep bonds he once shared with his community.
Strength and Resilience: He was the “rock” of our family and a true fighter. That same resilience allowed me to grow a business from a single threading chair into a full-service clinic. When challenges arise in my business, I draw on the strength I saw in him to keep pushing forward.
A “Giving” Mindset: My father found joy in giving. I carry this into my work by ensuring we provide “all-under-one-roof” care that truly serves the customer’s lifestyle, from their everyday skin needs to their most important wedding milestones.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
“I would tell her: ‘You matter, and you are more than enough.’ Growing up, I struggled with deep feelings of inferiority compared to my siblings. I allowed the negative comments of others to define my self-worth, leading me to believe I wasn’t beautiful or capable, which left me feeling very lonely.
Looking back, I now understand that the world often treats you the way you treat yourself. I once allowed others to diminish me because I held such a low opinion of myself. Today, I recognize my own value, and I would want my younger self to know that her worth was never defined by someone else’s perspective.
From Self-Doubt to Self-Made: How My Growth Built My Business
The most important lesson I’ve learned is that the world treats you the way you treat yourself. For a long time, I allowed my self-worth to be dictated by the opinions of others, which left me feeling inferior and invisible.
However, as I began to believe that I matter, my entire life shifted—including my business. This transformation is what fuels Seema’s Skin Care today:
Empowering Others: Because I once felt ‘not beautiful enough,’ I have made it my mission to ensure every client leaves my chair feeling seen, valued, and radiant.
Leading with Confidence: I realized that to lead a successful business and a growing team, I first had to believe in my own capability. Moving from one threading chair to a full-service clinic was only possible once I stopped thinking of myself as ‘less than’ others.
The Power of Resilience: That ‘lonely’ younger version of myself didn’t know her own strength. Today, I use that resilience to navigate the challenges of being an entrepreneur and to mentor other women who might be struggling with their own self-image.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Where are smart people getting it totally wrong today?
I wouldn’t say anyone is objectively wrong, but from my perspective, many highly successful people mistake material achievements for fulfillment. In today’s world, there is a common belief that degrees, bank balances, property, and status are the ultimate markers of success.
I believe that true wealth lies in our relationships and how we treat one another. A person can have every material luxury, but if they are alone, those things lose their value. Our purpose on this earth is found in human connection—making someone happy, offering a helping hand, uplifting others, or simply being present to listen. While society has shifted its parameters to measure life by what we own, I believe that family, friends, and loved ones are our only true wealth.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope my legacy is remembered simply: as Seema, a human being who made others feel that they truly matter. I want to be remembered for my authenticity—not by being harsh, but by leading with a duty to love and care for whoever is in my presence, whether that is a family member, a lifelong friend, or a stranger sitting in the next seat on a flight.
I strive to keep life simple by letting go of the complexities of biases, grudges, and heavy expectations. I entered this world with nothing, and I will leave with nothing. Staying grounded in this truth is the key to my peace, and I hope people remember me as someone who lived authentically and loved deeply.”
