Randy Kulina shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Hi Randy, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Golf has always been one of my favorite hobbies. It brings me both joy and of course a bit of frustration! I love being outdoors and golf offers the perfect mix of fresh air, competition, and mental challenge. It’s also become a great way for me to stay connected with friends as well as meet new people.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m a freelance producer with a passion for storytelling. Over the years I’ve carved out a niche in producing travel-related projects, taking on roles ranging from Development Producer to Executive Producer. Most recently, I’ve been serving as the Executive Producer and Showrunner of a show titled The Fixers. The Fixers is a feel good show in which a team of experienced builders travel around the world to locations in significant need and tackle projects that help the community. It’s the kind of project that combines international culture with real-world impact and I feel incredibly lucky to be part of it. This past season was also very exciting due to the fact that our team was recognized by the Academy and nominated for three Emmys. Outside of the Fixers I have produced content for companies such as FOX, Paramount, History Channel, HSN, Sierra Club, and Spectrum to name a few as well as a handful of independent feature films.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
I can’t point to one single moment that shaped how I see the world, but rather it’s been the experience of traveling the world itself. Visiting different countries and immersing myself in other cultures has truly reshaped my perspective. I believe travel is one of the most valuable forms of education and I encourage that everyone gets out. It teaches gratitude, broadens your understanding, and cultivates tolerance in a way that no other experience can.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
I think everyone in the creative industry has considered giving up in the recent years. Between COVID, industry-wide strikes, and rapid technological shifts, it’s been a tough time for freelancers and creatives alike. Gigs have become more scarce, and we’re all being pushed to adapt quickly, particularly when it comes to evolving technologies like AI and how it impacts our roles. Rather than giving up on the industry I have decided to lean into the changes and I have been open to learning new skills. I feel we all need to open to continue growing if we want to keep a career in any creative industry.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
One project that I’m deeply committed to, no matter how long it takes, is telling the Assyrian story. My family’s roots are Assyrian, an ancient culture that many people today don’t even realize still exists. It’s been a passion of mine to use my background in storytelling to bring that history, identity, and current struggles to light. While I haven’t yet found the perfect angle to tell this story, it’s a story that’s always on my mind. In fact, in 2024 I traveled to Iraq to celebrate Akitu, the Assyrian New Year, and that experience deepened my understanding of my personal heritage and the current Assyrian struggles. It opened up even more stories that need to be shared with the world.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. Are you tap dancing to work? Have you been that level of excited at any point in your career? If so, please tell us about those days.
My dancing skills are very questionable so I would never say that I tap dance to work, but I still get genuinely excited on day one of every shoot. Regardless if it’s working with a brand new crew or kicking off the 17th episode of a long-running show, there’s something electric about that first day. For me, the real highlight of producing is seeing all the planning, collaboration, and creativity come together. That moment when the cameras start rolling never gets old.
